Anyone heard much about the Pedders 50/50 shocks? And is it true that Monroe is a name to avoid? I'm up for a pair of front struts for the cressy for rego too, so doing the research.

Does the stiffness of the front shocks affect the weight transfer to the rear of the car when you go to launch it? I don't want it bogging or spinning etc. I currently have KYBs on the rear (unknown model and condition), but my front factory struts are blown.

I just want the damn thing to go around corners a bit better but still hook up at the track, it already has lowered king springs, but still legal height.

Monroe are just fine had double action from Monaro series on the GT Corona for decades running rally roads.

Struts on my 280zx are Konis but I hear Pedder are pretty good.

The way you make it go round corners is more than just shockers its camber castor, tyre size, wheel size, wheel weight, toe in/toe out, tyre type, horsepower, wheel alignment and rear wheel settings camber castor. Also spring rebound rate, progressive, Stiffness and unsprung weight (lighter wheels better) steering geometry..tyre pressures.etc.
Also well set up anti sway bars
Spring rates, and centre of mass.

You should be able to point a well set up car with the accelerator, watch the world rally cars..

My Corona GT in full Rally trim, REPCO Around Australia 12000 km in 1979.
we spent $$$ and it was able to maintain really high cruising speeds over thousands of KM of dirt as the forward control car,
    with never one crash.

We either drove it too slow on roads like this or it was well set up. what do you think??

TAKE A LOOK AT THE TRD SETUP OF THE REAR END.

    Normal Toyota

    TRD GT2000

Ask the racing teams (they won't tell you a thing). 2c.

But one of the secrets is the stanadium wheels from Italy worth about $500 each in 1976 and weighing less than 16 ounces.

Low unsprung weight less rebound on potholes better traction and contact with the road surface at all speeds.

Meh I'd stear clear of munroes the ones I put in the rona one front one blew after 5,000kms. For the money I'd go with KYB's.
    If in doubt power out

    You blew a shocker?

What ya do hit a kerbing front on.

Guarantee I pull these monroes off the GT and give them to you you will break your car before you break the shocks.

We hit holes in the roads at 150 k plus and never "blew a shocker" we did however pull the turret mounting point through the back floor on the north south dirst road from Alice and had to weld it up.

I tell you you wont even be able to open them without 2 guys pulling on a screw driver and holding them with your feet.

Boot of corona had 4 jerry cans three full of fuel 60 litres 1 water 20 litres plus 90 litre main tank and three spare tyres bolted on top of each other.

Rear of seat had full axle setup spare gaskets, parts, camping gear and valve two way radio equipment, Gross all up weight was 1250 kg.

Check the corrugation, distance was 900 km in 10 hours we blew one tyre and pulled out the strut but never lost a shock, they are still on the car 30 years later.

I guess Monroe don't make em like they used to hey?

Also, to get the top bolt off in the centre you can get someone to hold the plate underneath it as there is a grooved section where the shaft goes through. This will make sure the shaft doesn't turn. When putting the new shock back in, make sure that the notch lines up with the plate. You will see if it is wrong as the centre bolt will not do up all the way.

Took about 2 hours to do mine but every bolt in the car seemed to be siezed on! As well as that, I couldn't just hang the calipers on the control arms because of a bracket so had to take the calipers all the way off and then rebleed brakes.

    Give it a go.

Try spring compressors from your local toyota dealer?

    What is a bumpstop?

Thats to stop the suspension crashing out steel to steel when you hit a pothole so hard that you compress the shock and spring all the way to its full downward travel.

They are rubber and pretty obvious. Only on front suspension usually.

On rear they are on body above axle housing (the black bump thingie below).

It will stop the weld breaking the log off the lower shocker.

They fit early Rona's witha bit of a nudge wink.

Yeah I would vote for the KYBs, they are really popular and have all felt really good in the car's I've been in. For the price they are a good step up from Pedders and Monroe as people seem to have trouble with the other two and I've never heard anyone complain about the Excel Gs.

Has anyone had experience on a Toyota with any of the following?

    - Tein
    - Tanabe
    - Bilstein
    - Boge

Because I heard a lot less about these as they are less common is Australia, particularly on Toyotas.
