have you thought about looking up the site of companies that manufacture and sell the rings to see how they work?

Have a look at this site about gapless rings-
    http://www.dragracingonline.com/tech...onrings-3.html
Following is an excerpt from the site -
"The second ring design from Total Seal is very simple and straightforward. The ring is machined with a ledge (which faces down). A second, exceptionally thin ring rests in this ledge. In practice, this arrangement eliminates the gap. In operation, as a normal ring wears, the gap opens up, allowing more combustion gases to escape (which is really blow-by). The Total Seal GaplessŪ ring solves the problem. Its patented design incorporates this two-part interlocking ring that closes off the gap and provides a better or improved seal between the piston and cylinder. As the Total Seal ring wears, the gap remains sealed. The result is, no erosion in the ring capability and no erosion in performance."
Hope this gives you an idea of what the gapless rings are all about!
