a rebuild would probably include new pistons, balance crank shaft, new con-rods, new head studs, new everything except the block.. ?

Here are some modern terms used in the trade, to my understanding:

Basic service: Change engine oil and filter. Check all fluid levels, brake pads. Check tyres and pressures. Check CV boots. List faults and report for further work. Fill up washer bottle. New oil sticker.

Major service: All of the above plus new fuel filter, air filter, change brake fluid and coolant. Maybe replace timing belt, or whatever the book says to do.

    Tune up:
replace spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter. Check plug leads. Spray some wynns stuff of your choice down the thottle at the customers expence (may work, never know). Check ignition timing.

"Give the engine a bit of a freshen up"
This is a slang term, not written in any book. Generaly means pull the engine fully apart. Hone the cylinders, plane the head. Fit new rings and bearings but keep the old pistons.

    Full rebuild:
This term surgests the engine will be as good as a new one once done. More likely to involve a rebore and new pistons. New everything. Maybe even pollish the crank. Full valve regrind.

Well, looks like the engine only needs some head work done.

Valve resleeve and stem seals I think? Maybe even the seats as well.

Shouldn't cost too much... should it?

whats a valve resleve? if you can get a good zoomed in picture of the head then we might be able to tell if it needs work

if it does need all those things it dosnt even come close to being worth it.

No idea hey... That's what the owner told me.

I haven't bought it yet, so I can't get pictures.

so if you can ask him why he thinks it needs a refresh. Although another 20v would be relatively cheap

I'm assuming by valve resleeve he's talking about new valve guides, which means head off and sent to a head specialist. Any specialist means you are starting to talk Dollar$.

Valve stem seals you can do yourself if you have the equipment to remove the valve springs.

    Which I don't.

What if I sourced a reconditioned head or something along those lines? Better in the long run?

dude, the tools are available easily to do the valve stem seals.

i think the symptoms are smoking on idle, and smoke on start up?

theres a guide how to do the valve stem seals on a 2JZ, id imagine it'd be pretty damn similar for nearly all toyota engines.

ill link ya if you want.

Yeah, some smoke on startup. Spot on!

Yeah, link me as I have a 2min walk to New Town Toyota so I can pick up a seal replacement kit.

I am assuming the tools needed are readily available from repco/super cheaps?

I dont think changing the seals is the problem its getting the seals, I beleive the only way to get a set is to buy 2 sets for a toyota echo

    here ya go.

full props to whoever made the article yadda yadda yadda.

    http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/valve_stem/index.html

there was a fella on supraforums.com.au in perth selling the tools needed for the repair, they were snap-on and about $120 i think he wanted for them.

obviously these are the higher quality set, but buy em, and sell em off after your finished with them and it should be too expensive.

    not really...

    trouble no, time yes.

it imagine you could get it done in a weekend if you were really determined...

id suggest taking the bonnet off so you can sit somewhere in the engine bay, a board of wood on the suspension tower would be a good bet, save your back something chronic leaning over all the time.
