spark plugs!
throttle body cleaner?
Hey everyone,
I am looking at buying a car from a friend at school. It has a Silvertop 20 valve 4AGE. It needs a refresh.
This is what I understand needs to be done in a refresh:
- Clean fuel injectors, valve seats, and combustion chamber. I believe this is a fuel additive?
- Flush oil system
- Flush cooling system
- New oil and fuel filters
- New air filter
* Spark plugs
* Throttle Body clean-up
Anything else I am forgetting?
Cheers,
Chris

Research has shown child in front seat causes accidents, accident in back seat causes child
Added, thanks Norman.
Anything else?
bleed brakes
u'll want to go for new fluids all around i guess
new power steering fluid if u got it
new brake fluids
new gearbox fluid
wouldn't hurt to pull off the covers to take a look at the timing belt, and check the oil seals..
i'd go for a full checkup as well, look under car at bushes, condition of shocks, any exhaust leaks..

sounds like you are pretty much just doing a major service. All of the above plus dont forget brakes. You may as well just check everything else while your at it. CV's, ball joints, tyres, even lights. You dont wanna get caught out by an angry cop who's just missed out on the last doughnut.
Belts, hoses, fluids, filters, valve lash & timing. This is just basic maintenance.
I would NOT USE any oil & cooling 'flushes' unless Necessary!
Re-torque head.
Refresh?? I don't know what that means.
plug leads.
How do you 'use' an oil or coolant flush? Are you thinking of additives, 'cause I meant drain/fill flush.Originally Posted by allencr
Good idea about re-torquing the head. I don't have a torque wrench, but the uni does and it's a goodie!
I might get the belts and timing done by a pro, as I am not confident enough to do that myself with my limited tools and resources.
injector service, depends how much you wanna spend ?
peace
Well, I want to give it a pretty good treatment since I'll be getting the car so cheap.
There is an injector place up the road from my house, so I'll prolly take them there.
you could just buy an ultrasonic cleaner cheap and do it yourself, would retorqueing the head be worth it? I mean I have never heard of one blowing a gasket
Before you go and waste time and money (and probably even before you buy the car), take the spark plugs out and do a compression test. Expect over 160psi on all 4, otherwise the engine is coming out for a rebuild.
Now you know the comp test is good, you can go ahead with new oils and sparkplugs and whatever.
I can't believe people don't know what refresh is.. otherwise known as a 'freshen up'
Remove engine, remove head, remove sump, remove rods and pistons. get block honed, refit with new rings, and inspect and replace rods/main bearings if req, timing belt then re assemble with new gaskets.
What's the difference between a 'freshen up' and a rebuild then.
IMO I would just do a thorough checkover of the car and then just fix/replace whats necessary. I wouldn't bother with any of the timing or re-tensioning of the head gasket as it's highly unlikey there will be a prob with them ( unless maybe someone has tinkered with the dizzy and not kept or redone the timing, in which case you'll be able to tell by the way the car runs).
