No problems. My only worry would be a huge number of threads to watch over if it was one thread per engine type
The most user friendly format for my mind is one thread per engine class. It will make it an easy thread to scroll though (for everyone but Bigperm who hates to Scroll anyway)
If it was going to be one thread for all engines I'd rather see it as Josh suggested. 1 Thread for each post, no replies, no hassels just a list of posts so the headings are nice and easy to Search for.
We will discuss this at Tuesdays Board meeting if its not resolved before then.

If the prefference is for a single thread per engine type then I guess we could make the section moderated so each post would be checked before going up. That would definately keep out the chit chat but it would also give a delay in the post appearing.
Don't know if you would have to do it that way but I know that if I saw a chit chat post in the thread I would hit the report to moderator button and then you guys can deal with it. Save heaps of time for mods. I am sure one person would be able to do the same for each engine type.
Have the rules re chit chat in bold at the very top of first post and then no excuses.
My vote is for a separate thread for each engine family, ie all the 4A's in together, 1Gs, M's etc, so that you keep the general number of threads down but you don't have to wade through too much irrelevant info.
When you go looking to use this resource it will be for info about an engine in particular.

Yep the idea I have in mind is basically a library of "recipes". "If I want to build a 1J what options have people already figured out" kind of thing. Then if there is further questions that can be covered in tech and conversions.
I know you guys keep saying put the rules in bold at the top of the page but frankly that doesn't work.
If people don't want to read them they just won't no matter what you do.
BUT, Josh,
I'm willing to help out Matt with the heavy moderation of the section.

i vote for keeping family engines together..
ie
K
A
M
G
JZ
UZ
etc....
then it's easy to compare within families.
should there be a format (that most ppl won't use anyway), or let ppl structure how they want?
i'm happy to newb bash the threads(by report button or whatever)

Hi,
Wouldn't that mean a lot of cross referencing between the dyno charts and relevant threads in the tech section?Originally Posted by Joshstix
I know some people want this (dyno area), but I can't see why such a thread can't just go into the normal general car (or tech) section of the forums.
We already have enough dedicated threads in the general car section, so what's the issue with another one? I'm sure the dyno thread will be as well patronised as the other dedicated threads, and as the dedicated threads aren't being relocated to a separate section, despite numerous complaints to get them relocated, then why should a dyno thread be treated any different?
There's also a few 2T and 18R threads, so if we are going to put up a separate area for the dyno then we should revamp the lot and put up one for the dedicated engines, one for dedicated cars, etc.

The idea is for this not to happen. The dedicated threads seem to be just general chit chat a lot of the time and as such are not that good for tech info. and can be quite hard to find what you are looking for. I know the ones I look at have a lot of the questions repeated several times.Originally Posted by river
People have said that they would be happy to moderate a dyno results area to keep the chit chat out. Questions are for pm or go and ask the person in the "XXX car dedicated thread" if you think that others may like to know the answer to.
I don't think a dyno results area has much in common with the dedicated threads at all. Dyno results = no chit chat. Dedicated = copious chit chat and whoring.
From what I have seen on other forums it can definitely work and I found it very helpful. That is why I suggested it.
Hi,
I see your point, but the only difference between any of the existing dedicated threads and the proposed dyno thread is the dyno thread will have some very strict moderation. Other than that, in regards to it being a "dedicated type of" thread, it's the same as any other dedicated thread.
Therefore I can't see any reason why it can't go in the general car area with all the other threads.
The point I'm making is that unless you're going to move all dedicated threads to a specific area, then there's no reason why the dyno thread needs its own special spot.
I'm not trying to stop a dyno thread. Matter of fact I'm all for it. But I don't see why it needs to be in a specific location, where the general car area would suffice. It just needs to be tightly moderated.

Aaah, I gotcha.
Well whack the dedicateds in a dedicated section in general and you could whack the dyno results in there by engine class as well if you wanted. I think it is more of a tech thing though.

Since I'm not going to be in the country for the board meeting I'll spell it out for you and answer your questions here. I'll label each topic in your quote so you can see which I am replying to.Originally Posted by river
1) The aim is for it to be as I said, basically a library of configurations for people to learn from. If there is a dedicated thread with no discussion allowed how is this any different? You'd still have the same thing happening.
2) Again the idea is to make a resource that is out of the league of what generally happens in the general forums area's. This should be a refference area much like a FAQ.
3) A dyno thread would be treated differently because it is not a situation where people are complaining that they have to scroll past some threads because they are about a topic which doesn't interest them. This is a pro-active productive effort to improve the resources available to people in modifying Toyota power plants.
4) People should be looking at the Dyno section as somewhere to show the results of the massive amount of chat in the dedicated engine threads. A dynomometer is a tool that measures the power put to the wheels by an engine. Having a resource that lists the results for this for a variety of different configurations is a completely different thing to dedicated sections for different cars etc, they would be chat and totally subjective.
I'm not too sure how up to speed you are on the aims of the forum. One of the main aims of the forum is to build a single Toyota enthusiast community. This is the main reason why there will not be seperate sections for a variety of different discussion topics. Segregating discussion based on model etc leads to division of the community which is not an aim of the club or the forum we run.
