Tremec = reasonably priced, should hold up, but isn't exactly the sweetest box around... 500-600hp 1UZ would be making less torque than many 2JZ's, so I wouldn't be so stressed there. I'm (gradually!) working on a blown 1UZ, but aiming a little higer in the power stakes. In the interest of keeping it affordable, and driveable, I've gone with the auto. Because I'm getting someone I know to do the auto for me, it's costing many times less than what fitting any strong enough manual box would have, plus I won't end up with a knee-snapping clutch.

If you've got decent bottom end from your engine, then you won't so much need tightly spaced gears. Then again, you can always go talk to Holinger, or try one of the drag boxes (Lenco, etc.) if you're full of cash!

your going for more than 600hp out of a 1UZ and your keeping it "affordable" by sticking with an auto!??!

id like to have that moneh

but i see your point, i suppose the intention of the car is what'll make the decision for you.

matty, you said to me, for drag, auto is king, but this isnt just for drag is it?! ehehehe

Affordable... or MORE affordable - at least if the transmission costs less, I can spend more on the engine.

    ahahah, new toymods motto:

Toymods - Saving money and effort, so you have more money to spend on going faster.

kind of misleading, as you dont actually save any money at all, it just gets put into other places

unfortunately, mine keeps finding a black hole, and i never see it, or the effects of spending it, ever again

The V160 would be nice but if you are eventually looking at 600hp and giving it a hard time just go straight to the Tremec TKO600. Twice as strong as the V160, ratios suit a boosted UZ perfectly and the shift is sweet. All up cost is very similar to used V160.

If you want a drag monster though just build the auto and manualise it. Having been for a rid in 1JZrollas auto 1J with B&M shifter really opened my eyes to the fun these style shifters are.

How much did your clutch end up being Justen? I'm undecided what's the best way to do, so knowing all the variables helps

And Justen, where did your bellhousing to bolt the Tremec up come from?

For what they are the TKO600 looks very well priced, better than a V16x and NEW!

Yup the TKO is a pretty sweet box and great value for money....stacks up well even agains the big names like Hollinger i reckon. Not the flexibility in ratios etc which is the strength of Hollinger but has the toughness and is still pretty refined....lightyears ahead of the T56 Ford and Holden use in shift quality.

Affirmative on the clutch. How does the TKO compare size wise?

Size wise to the V160? I haven't had them side by side. Look's alot shorter but about the same width and height...was taller than the R154 i had.

I doubt the TKO would be any bigger than the V160 so in this case (JZA80) I doubt there would be clearance issues. For other cars though (eg anything designed for a W58) you probably wouldn't be so lucky.

Of course Justen had to build his trans tunnel from scratch anyway so it didn't really matter!

Hmm so it would appear i may be better off with the TKO box then. What flywheel are you using justen? Or do people like clutch master do a flywheel and clutch kit to suit the TKO to the UZ? and crs do the bellhousing.

time to start pricing it up then i guess........yep im still sitting down

Flywheel options are many. Most of the twinplate clutches will come with their own flywheel. A 3SGTE flywheel is a common fitment with minor mods. You can redrill a GTR flywheel as ring gear is same dia which opens up a huge raange of clutches. Or just go custom with CRS and a few US and NZ companies offering custom ones. The choice is yours

Justin i assume you are using the TKO600?? Do you know which 5th gear ratio box your using? is it .82 or .64?

What diff ratio are you running? and how many revs approx are you doing in 5th at 100k's?

    Cheers
