    [QUOTE=Steve M]I can't see a dowel hole in the centre flange on those vernier gears, I reckon you'd want one on there.
    [QUOTE]

    They have a dowel. Here are some pics. These are for a 18rg.

    im having a spot of bother...

    my 18RG is out of an RX63 cressida, but, according to wikipedia, that model doesnt exist, and the R only came in the X32!?

    it also says the 18rg was only avaliable in:
    * 1973-1981 Toyota Celica Celica GT 2000
    * 1982-1983 Toyota Celica Celica GT (RA63)
    * 1974-1983 Toyota Carina Carina GT 2000
    * 1978-1983 Celica Camry GT 2000
    * 1973-1982 Toyota Corona Corona GT 2000

    so, how do i tell where mines from?!?!?!

    sump configuration?

    its a 250 head with EFI (i posted earlier, and we came to the conclusion that it was modded to EFI.)

    Alex, where did you get those cam gears from? Same place Ive been looking at? If they do have the dowel pin hole then I will investigate if a group buy is pheasable

    ok well i have gotten the head off my 18rg (230 head).The valves appear to be the same as later 8825* head

    also the rings are rusted so when this was rebuilt it sat for a while but it must of got some water into the bores also theres abit of surface rust on the bores and conrods

    so i am going replace all bearings and piston rings gaskets etc the timing chains appear to be in good nick

    also the head will be sent away and properly serviced.i will also be going to get these checked out by a pro (see around the water galleries )

    have a good one

    I reckon those are 18RGEU rods (same as 18RC) and 88270 pistons, am I right?

    That corrosion is a bit weird, usually all th water ports need welding or all of them need no welding, you've got some some that are rooted and others that are mint.
    That just looks a little bit strange to me.

    Also, what's with the signature under the head? Do you know?

    Chances are that engine was build from spare parts and that's the rebuilders signature. They usually leave numbers somewhere to mark their work.

    WellI have finally started to put an 18rgu into my 28 but now I have found a trap for the un initated. I wnated to put a set of webers on instead of the old and somewhat suspect solex's but alas the dont fit with the short style intake manifold. So I am now in need of the early style longer type.The other discrepancies I have are the location and funtion of the PCV valve, and the engine breather assembly. some pics would be much appreciated for this setup.

    airfireman1,

    Do you have the OEM spacer blocks on the manifold?

    I have a good long manifold I can sell you only problem they do not leave much room for filters or Ram Tube. I can do a cable throttle kit for the Webers too. I can do an exchange deal and even buy those suspect Solexes off you.

    PM me.

    i am about to buy two rg's one is a 253 head with yamaha stamped on it. the other is a 230 head, the problem is im going to freshen up one and put it in the car now, as the 18rc is about dead, and the other i am giong to work wth my father, i just dont know which one is the better option for modification. both have standard carbs attatched but neither have exhaust manifold so i will be buying a set of extractors. The second engine that will probably be going down the path of having a turbo straped next to it. so i will need a efi kit.

    any info would be muchly appreciated. i have done a search and will continue to search untill i find an answer. Its just i have never had any experience in the rg and dont know apples from oranges.

    also if anyone has any pics or can describe the best way to mod the throttle likages or what calbe to use that would make my life much easier.

    + rep to all who help.

    88253 head is the better to modify. It already has the 10mm exhaust studs, more meat around the ports to play with, double valve springs and better design.

    Hope that helps

    I hate to sound like an arsehole, but you couldn't have searched too hard.

    Taken from the very first post in this thread

    The Early 18R-G, number 88210 and 88230

    The heads are commonly considered the worst of all the 18R-G heads - rumoured to have smaller valves, and definitely having smaller ports, their overall design is improved upon as the engine went through its phases.

    The 18R-GU, number 8825*

    There were improvements with this new generation of 18RGs though - the head received a little bit of a working over, receiving larger porting, better casting design and larger valves (now 45mm intake and 38.5mm exhaust).
    The very last of the 18R-GUs was the 88253. Virtually the same as previous 18R-GU's except that the head was yet again updated with dual valve springs, larger ports again, better casting, larger exhaust studs, and other little improvements.
    I think one could assume from this not-so-subtle observation that the 253 head would be a better head to use

    Cheers,
    Timbo

    I have some pictures up on my web site that can give ideas about how to fit a throttle cable.

    I will post up a couple more here over the weekend once I load them into Imageshack.

    The 18R-G/Solex set up is the easiest to do.

    Webers are a little more tricky again. Webers and Dellortos have smaller diameter throttle shafts so cannot use the same shaft fittings off the Solex.

    BTW for Webers on the 18R-G short manifold there are a few options, some are:

    1) Blank off the PCV, remove the balance tube and use softmounts.

    2) Blank off the PCV, remove the balance tube, make up two covers to cover the holes in the manifold and use the OEM spacers.

    3) Make up two plates with pipe welded in, use hose and "T" piece to reconnect the PCV pipe. Then use the OEM spacers to keep the PCV system functioning.

    4) Leave all OEM stuff in place and buy Weber Choke/Starter blanking kits which allows removal of the choke/starter mech and cover.

    Regards

    Rodger

    thaks witzl, that was what i was looking for.
    timbo, i have been searching, mainly on this thread and almost certain the 253 head was the way to go, but this thread is 54 pages long and that is a lot of info.
    rodger those pics would be very handy for me and other people.

    I have decided to and gone with option 2. Now I am looking at linkage setups,it would be good to try and get them looking as close to factory as possible.
    Thanks for puting that info up.
    cheers
