Just use a 18R one.Half the price of the RG one and does the same job.

My memory is a bit fuzzy as well, but I think that engine came with a breaker-point dizzy? I'm pretty sure I only have one electronic dizzy and it's the one I've always had.

But then again my brain isn't as young as it used to be.

Hmm... my brain is still fuzzy... dont remember what dizzy I was using as I was still playing around finding the problem it had (ended up being that damned Bosch alternator that I bought new for $230). Thought that I was running electronic though as I didnt changeover the dizzy before I sent it. Only thing I did was remove the alternator and engine mounts, the rest stayed.

    Guys need some help...

I have a diagram like this from River for the 2TG showing all the timing chain dampers/guides etc from when I replaced all mine:

Is the 18RG setup pretty much the same or is it different? Anyone got a diagram like this? Reason I ask is I bought all my guides from stewart wilkins, but they dont seem to list as many for the 18RG as they do for the 2TG... just wondering if they are missing some from their list, or if the 18RG is actually different to the 2TG (I cant see why though).

    Thanks guys.

setup is pretty much identical Dana. Problem is that they arent made any more, and as the 18RG are a better more popular engine () their stocks have run out sooner than the 2TG... which obviously nobody in their right mind would use ()

In all seriousness though, it would have just been a case of less stocks were held at time of discontinuity.

    hey all,

got a whole crap load of problems with my 18RG at the moment, but i get the feeling most of them come down to piss poor ignition timing, though unfortunatly the dizzy is pretty worn so it doesn't hold timing very well (plenty of shaft play),
my problems go something like this:

biggest concern is oil pickup, when you start it up first thing it makes a god aweful timing chain rattle until it gets oil into the tensionser (i'm assuming they're hydraulicly tensioned). how can i cure this? is there something arye with my oil pickup? am i using the wrong oil? is my timing chain tensioner farked?

next on the list is the thing running on, or "diseling"... now i remember on the 18RC in the other car there was an "anti-diseling solinoid" or atleast that's what i was told it was called, all i did was replace it and that solved the problem... but i'm not sure what's in these weber sidies... what should i be looking for?

    any suggestions?

Radman... what oil filter are you using?? There is a filter (Z148 I think) which has an anti drainback valve fitted. This will significantly reduce the amount of startup rattle. Also, have you adjusted the tensioner?? Yes they are hydraulic, but they still need manual adjustment to get them in a reasonable range.

As for the dieseling, the side draughts dont normally have a soleniod like the 18RCs do. So to cure that, it will be a matter of good tuning, and make sure there is no large chunks of carbon on the piston or in the combustion chamber causing hot spots.

owen - can you confirm that oil filter? the thing on it atm is a repco spec budget ryco something,

haven't got so far as the tensioner yet, gonna replace the o-ring this weekend, then will go from there

was thinking about the carbon build up too, gonna get a bottle of metamucil-for-your-car, hopefully it'll go through and clean the crap out.

also another query reguardig the balance pipes on the manifold, on mine it has all 4 runners linked together with some rubber hose and irrigation fittings (backyard job), but on my bike it had 1 and 4 linked, then 2 and 3 linked, i know it'll all vary on the type of engine, but can someone confirm how the balance pipes are suppose to be?

Ryco is generally the brand to get if you arent getting genuine Toyota. Just find the stock filter (Z89 I think), and find another filter with the same thread and other mounting specs (plenty about), thats shorter and specifies that it has an anti-drain back valve. Will try and find the one though... will look on my 18RC tonight, pretty sure I used one on there.

Owen is pretty close. Z418 I think is what he was getting at. Nice compact filter, good pressure and anti-drainback valve. I've never had any issues with it. Basically, anything with a 3/4" thread will fit.
Nikita the RA23 is almost finished .

I though there was another as well as the Z418

Again, I will have a look tonight when I go to pull the BMC out.

Why not go to Toyota and get a genuine filter??

Anyone sucessfully created an AC compressor mount to put an 18RC AC compressor onto an 18RG?? photos and/or technical documentation would be well repped.
