I would not say that, the most important piece is the crank, a good machinist and a balance shop after the crank is finished.

I think the hardest part would be the cost involved for an untested modification, the "what if factor". Limited parts I will give you that, but man, that would be the ultimate beast if it could be built using a mix of factory parts from different JDM sources...

anyone running coil packs in the 18rg?

i had some spare 1jz ones laying around and i dropped them in seam to fit ok.. just need a bolt welded into the rocker cover... they dont seal against the hole though so water and shit could get in.. anyone have any better ideas? prefer drop in options instead of the other coils and leads people run.. want it to be nice and tidy..

i looked at these once, not sure what model fits in Aust, but the UK had 18rg plugs advertised on ebay a few times..though they were around 100 AUD per plug.

what do you mean 18rg plugs? are you talking about drop in coil packs?

I guess thats what they are called.
Basically an ignition coil pack spark plug. as on say, a falcon.

Coil on plug setup. Clean and tidy so long as you don't need cdi units for them those things are pricey

I'm using 2ZZ coils (almost identical to 1NZ) on my 18R-GTE. They are too tall for the head and require an aluminium plate to mount properly, but do the job. Always interested in a better fitting unit, but they need to be 'smart' coils, ie the ignitor is inbuilt. A simple 2 wire coil won't work for me.

if im running a haltech ecu could i just use any drop in coils?

also whats the deal with the breather on an 18rg? the one under the carbs. i was at you pull it the other day and saw an 18rc in an old hilux that had the block off plate on the side the same but it was blank. no breather..

my engine usually at high rpm spits a little bit of oil out of here. i was planning to put a speed flow fitting here with a custom plate and run it to a catch can along with the rocker cover breather.

but after seeing this block off plate on the 18rc makes me thing i can just grab that plate and block it off on mine.. is this possible? will i cause any damage? ie bottom end not breathing?
i could always over come this by having a bigger rocker cover breather...

im running custom quad throttles so no breathers will go to intake. btw

The question of running coils depends a lot on ecu if you go full sequential you need enough outputs to run them all might also need cdi or ign module depending on the coil. You will also need to run a crank trigger wheel to get ur timing bang on

I run a breather from the auxilary shaft box (under the carbs) and from the rocker cover to a catch can near the wiper motor, the race engine does 6,000 to 8,500 all day and never has a problem. My thinking is the higher reving 18RG creates a lot of crankcase pressure and relieving it has to be a good thing as it will save oil seals from blowing out.

You are on to something, I remember when I was looking at a 18-RG or 10-RG which had a additional breather from an opening the "Exhaust" Side of the block from a older RX22 Corona in Japan. I'll find my pictures of that assembly, but you can tell where the breather once stood when you see the flat area on the newer blocks.
