I do not believe the catch can itself is an issue for legalities, it is when people put a catch can and vent it to atmosphere that it becomes illegal. Would have to check that to be sure, but that is what I have been led to believe. Legalities surrounding catch cans is based on either pollution (release of unburnt hydrocarbons), or a fire hazard. A fully contained system such as the one in the photo should cover both those bases.

VPatrol, extractors are easy to get for the 18R-G (any 18R-G variant will fit, as they all ran the same basic exhaust ports). Not sure about the land of the long white sheep, but over here, I can walk into any dodgy exhaust shop I want and order a new set.

As for the auxilliary shaft (no balance tube in an 18R), put a request into the parts wanted area of the classifieds. The parts wanted is open to all forum members to start threads, not just priveledged users, so there is nothing stopping you. Not a bad idea to link that thread in this thread once you have done so.

I'm replacing the 18R with an 18R-G so I do need a balance tube. Good idea on classifieds as I doubt I will find a new one anywhere!

Please show me a picture of said balance tube. I have owned about 6 18R-G's, and about 10 18R-C's, and have never seen or heard of one having a balance tube. You are thinking of an auxilliary shaft, which has a lobe to run the mechanical fuel pump (except the 18R-GUE or 18R-E item), a gear to drive the oil pump (and dizzy on 18R-C), and a keyway on the front for timing gears, which is longer for the 18R-G series due to the dizzy drive also.

balance tube to balance the vaccuum signal from the carbies for booster etc.

    Not a balance shaft.

Here is picture of said balance tube in its munted shape. I'm assuming JB weld or some really awesome gunk.

    That would be great thanks.

how well does this stuff handle paint or maybe powder coated? The previous owner ground the head cover down so its really a blank canvas waiting to be colored. Just not sure about heat since I've never attempted it before.

My apologies. Haven't played with the carbies on them 18R-G's for some time, I think I started with EFI in 2003??

JB Weld is indeed strong shit, make sure it is that, and not selley's knead it though, they look somewhat similar, but don't do the same amount of work. Of course, aluminium welding can be done for a reasonable cost if a replacement is unable to be sourced.

No worries. I'm clueless more often than not with this stuff.

It looks like there is a substantial section which rotted/cut away and its so caked on with the stuff that if I can get a decent replacement, I'll just go that way. No idea how much of the stuff is poking on the inside either.
