Without the stroker, yeah you would have pretty low compression. My 8.3:1's have a noticeable rise in them. Flat tops would possibly work, but again, you are running rather low compression on that.

I'm not going for a turbo... just keeping it simple... but that itself may pose a challange.

Does anyone make oversized high compression pistons for these any more?

flat tops give approx 7.5:1 with standard bore from memory.....the 2.4 stroker also has flat tops but with increased capacity it give more like 9.5:1

LC Engineering have pistons in stock for the 20R and 22R without valve reliefs. What are the most critical dimensions I need to be looking for to compare them with the 18R? Obviously bore is going to be the big one, what about gudgeon to crown height? and how will 10:1 for a 20R translate to an 18R? much the same?

I'm almost finished rebuilding my Step Sons RG and I have used standard 18R pistons with factory .040" O/S bore(was originally 9.7 comp).Runs 210 head with 40mm Solexs,Extractors and what seems to be a balanced crank.I have built other RG'S with 18R pistons and never really found that there was a problem.
In its original form before the rebuild which was caused from a loose gudgeon pin and a skirt missing off one piston it was performing very well reving freely all the way to 7500rpm.
So after I finish the rebuild I will keep ya's posted on what it performs like.
    Cheers Brett.

    Hi,

Nahh, The 88 is cool. Like me, she understands there are the talented few who can tune Solex and have them singing sweetly, and the vast majority who can't.

what's so tricky about solex's? We had Dana's old hybrid running a 4.5kg flywheel and it idled (and ran) as smooth as silk with 40mm Solexs..

All carby's can run smoothly it is just the clowns who tune them that make them run better. Some are better than others.
