omegaman - i haven't done much looking into decking the block, looks like there's plenty of meat there when i last looked, but i wasn't paying too much attention... what should i be looking out for?

I think the rule of thumb would be, the piston clearance to the valves and the amount of
    adjustment on the tentioner.

Ok so it comes time to decide what oil to run in my 18RGEU. It is a fully rebuilt 88253 head motor running EFI. All rings, bearings, seals, timing gear, etc have all been replaced. Everything was measured and blueprinted in the rebuild, so all is within the factory manuals tolerances.

Any recommendations on oil weights or brands?

Penrite HPR 10 or HPR 15 would be my preference. Maybe HPR 5 if you have high rev cams.

Decking the block may not be wise to do. Surfacing, yes to get good clean metal.

Remember that the head chamber is a smaller diameter than the bore and the piston top (not the crown) comes flush (or bloody close) with the top of the block and really only clears the head by the thickness of the head gasket.

Taking material off the head over about 1mm may also compromise piston to head clearance.

    Regards

Hi, my 18R-G has the 88270 head which according to the start of this thread came with the EFI engines. Mine runs Solex's, does this mean the EFI has been removed at some stage or were they built with bith EFI and carbies?

Have a look at your thermostat housing. Take a photo of it even. If it zigzags toward the front of the motor, then its most likely been retrofitted with carbies. Also, the ports in the EFI heads had cutouts at the top for injectors, not sure about what it would be like if it were carbied from factory.

Also, your head may be a replacement for a farked one, so it could well have been a different block, with a 270 head retrofitted, and the standard carbies put back on.

It was very common in the 90's (when most 18R-G's were brought into the country) for importers to rip the EFI gear off 18R-GEU's and replace it with carbies. Back in those days everyone was afraid of EFI and/or was convinced carbies are "better".

Like in the dark ages when books were evil eh Norbie?? Sounds like importers didnt think about the niche market they would have now.

Anyone know of an 18R-C EFI setup floating around?? Or a setup that wouldnt take much to convert?? (ie port spacings are close, TB doesnt point to the firewall etc)

I'm pretty sure there was such a thing as an 18R-EU but your chances of getting your hands on any of that gear now is pretty remote. You might want to contact thechuckster, he made his own EFI manifold and I'm sure he looked into adapting other stuff before he went to that effort.

Pretty sure there was a efi turbo setup for an 18RC on here for sale not that long ago. You could see if they would sell just the efi if you can find it.. Sorry i cant remember who was selling it...
