    i like em,... lol

if you keep the maintenance up they are good, but you do also get the odd bad one in the bunch (the built on a friday at 4:30pm ones) shocks n brakes are your usual maintenence item, and dont last 20 yrs.... shocks have a life expectancy of 5-10 years depending on car.....

but yeah, get some good advice on whats hapening with it, a quote may cost you $30 (if they charge you at all?)

but that lil cash could save you hrs of replecing parts that dont need to be replaced....

Umm... Alternator bearings were stuffed, oil pump housing flogged out where the alternator pivots, water pump bearing was stuffed, AC HP hose cracked, CV boots shot (expected), reversing light switch shot, dash cracked in 5 places (always had cover since new), rear parcel shelf is falling to bits (speakers are in standard slot, not in parcel shelf), sunvisor stuffed, both door handles broke, drivers window regulator snapped the cable, hubcap paint crumbled... how many things need to go wrong with them before you count them as a crap car blake?? This car has had the oil and filter changed every 8000kms and all other maintenance items done before due. Also, mum had an excel (before she crashed it), and the paint went shit and dash cracked badly... all within 2 yrs of buying it new.

lol, you must have got a firday car then,...lol,

we have alot of regular excel customers, they all tend to be pretty good, ranging from the 1st version till the late 90's ones.....we would put thru 5-10 or so a week...had 2 today also (drivers window regulator 180,000ks.. ) and another with 90ks service...both are regular customers tho, and well maintained,

i also got my sister one, as there such a good lil cheap car, that also has just under 200,000ks and still going strong,

like i said b4, you do get lemons in the batch....you cant help that,

but anyway, the boss is gone for a week, and we are finished for today almost

lets get back on topic, lol

i agree with the friday arvo car, i used to work for a hyundai dealer and have nothing but respect for the brand now (lavitas and granduers excepted from respect). also my aunty has an early build X3 single cam and thats nearly hit 400,000km and its still going no worries what so ever.

Every parts supplier I have asked for parts from say 'yeah, we get a lot of them through... you broken the door handles yet??', so it cant just be lemonitis. Its enough to put me off ever buying another, should have just put a/c in the laser.

But anyways... I think all agree so far that a workshop diagnosis will be money well spent, and will most likely save in the long run.

Maybe so, but I am trying to sell the damn thing so I am not really concerned about 'the long run'.

I'll have a look at it on Friday, jack it up and we will soon see what the extent of the damage is.

I hear you can get replacement end-tanks for these radiators, which is good considering the core itself looks almost new, bar a few dead bugs of course.

I just need to have a few hours set aside to look at it and get it done.

By 'the long run' I mean between now and when the problem is fixed and ready to sell. If it overheats during the test drive and blows another radiator top tank, and another thermostat, then are you going to take it in for a diagnosis?? By that stage the problem has got worse, there will be more things damaged, the head will probably have been warped if not already... your just going to end up spending half what the car is worth. At least if you get a diagnosis now, you can fix what needs to be fixed, or work out if its even worth fixing, and sell the car as is.

Well, good news! A blown head gasket is ruled out! There is no evidence of water in the sump, and no evidence of frothy stuff under the oil cap.

I am heading to the hyundai wreckers this morning to get some bits, and ask the guys there if I need to replace the whole radiator or just the end tank.

Hoping to god it doesn't cost me too much. ^_^

Talk to a radiator shop about whether or not you can replace the top tank. I have seen it done on a Laser, so cant see a reason why it couldnt be done on a Hyundai. The wreckers wouldnt know the process of replacing a top tank, so they would tell you to replace the whole thing as it gives them a sale.

Was there a leak other than the top tank?? Have you found it/looked?? Check for water pump bearing play too.
