Default '86 mr-2 brake upgrade options

so what options do i have? what is going to be the easiest to get done. i spot a few tidbits on the net every now and then that i can use 88/89 brakes but i want to know if this is worth it or if there is a better option. i currently am running stock rims but am willing to change if it gets me better braking.

    thanks in advance.

first thing is why do you want better brakes?
if its for road use then maybe a noverhaul and good pads is all you need?

for racing there are several options, st205 front brakes, sw20 rears, need 16s to fit st205 fronts though.

I haven't fully research this so don't quote me on it but my plans are to use ADM ST185 (big single piston calipers and bigger rotors) rotors and calipers up front, then use me front disk on the rear with SW20 rear calipers. I have been getting conflicting info with some people saying all of that is a straight bolt up affair, others say there are so mods needed. If you do go down that path I'd be keen to hear how it went.

st205 brakes are MASSIVE....way overkill for an mr2....
i know you want/need big/bigger brakes..but mate..this is one big mother. had wheel clearing problems in my st162. otherwise a bolt-on....not ure about mr2

i think what i will do is make a couple of templates/take some measurments and head to the wrecker and see what i can spot. so much toyota stuff is compatable i should be able to get what i want and have it (close to) bolting right on.

well, as i said it depends on application.... i know of a few aw11s that can make use of the st205 brakes.
i also know that most can make do with just an overhaul and some decent pads.
    how are your tyres? suspension?
cant make the most of your brakes in those arnt up to it

for autocross and what sounds like dragracing, id say stock with good pads will be enough
mine had stock brakes and was plenty good enough for the hills near home, which are steeper and tighter than anything yo uhave over there!!

I found these on ebay today. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...0075&rd=1&rd=1 not exactly an upgrade but being slotted and drilled they should help with pad wear and tear.

not sure if your hills are steeper and tighter but i can tell you i live in a town called Rocky Mountain House, it has the name for a reason.

The NZ hills are great! Wouldn't mind taking the mr2 for a spin round them. If its not raining...

The only thing I've found when upgrading the brakes is either to keep the stock ones and get better pads/rebuild the calipers or go get something with a larger disk and larger brake pad, if you can't get anything bigger than stock there's no point.
I wouldn't worry too much about brake fade. The 87+ brakes are more than up to the job. Has anyone managed to make them fade??

Oh wait, you have the 86 model. I'd go with the 87+ calipers + disks as there's less messing around and its a simple swap.

As said the late model AW11 brakes are quite decent and a significant upgrade from the early stuff.

Personally I'm running sigle spot ST185 front callipers with redrilled ST185 front rotors. On the back I am running SW20 gen3 turbo rear callipers with AW11 front rotors and a spacer to make it align.

ST185 twin pot calipers WILL fit the standard hubs with NO modifications, you can keep the standard discs also.

i am running this setup, the swap was as easy as removing original ones and bolting in new ones....

you can use 15's with a high offset they still clear very well no spacers needed.

also try some GOOD brake pads, like endless etc

hey, definately go for the st205 fronts!! wonderful upgrade, stops like nothing else!
apart from actually finding parts, the conversion is really easy! (see here for my upgrade: http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...ght=aw11+st205 )

and who cares if people say its overkill?
    so worth-while

although you will need bigger wheels...
