while you're in the early days of planning, can i advise that:
-newell highway (from Dubbo going north up to Goondiwindi) is OK-ish but a bit bumpy
-anything heading north or eastward of Goondiwindi is as bumpy as hell and i'm never travelling on them again.

Given that you're being tourists, i'd suggest going from Dubbo to Tamworth and heading up the New England highway as it's 100% improvement on the Newell and Goondiwindi roads.

If you have an idea of how you want to cross Qld, i can post more info on roads

Which way did you guys head home? Which way WOULD you head home now?

We're planning to head up the coast from Brisbane till we hit Townsville then across to Mt Isa.

we came back via New England (Gilgandra, Coonabarabran, Tamworth, Armidale, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, ...) - much nicer roads but adds 1-2 hrs to the trip.

Going up the coast would be even longer, but if your trek included a Sydney visit after Dubbo then it probably makes sense to stick to the coast.

edit: i do not want to go on the roads leaving north or east from goondiwindi - they suck and are rough as shit.

in which case you'll have to factor in a few hours for someone's car (hopefully not mine) to break down or suffer some kind mechanical ailment.
