Perth to eastern states is alot cheaper, as the trucks are generally heading back empty. It's called 'backfill' or something. Anyways, i've heard its' around $300 to ship out of perth.

The sights aren't going to magically disappear though I'm more needing a more concrete plan than I had for the last trip, because I'm not even going to contemplate this without budgeting properly this time!

It is including airfares. That said, it saves the drive across the Nullarbor which costs 3 days which for a trip like that is 3 days that could be better spent somewhere else.

Dude, that adds around 2700km to a trip which is about 12-13000km long anyway! Once you factor in accommodation and fuel into the crossing, it doesn't work out *that* much cheaper. It would still cost around ~$600 to for two people to cross the Nullarbor (depending on the price of fuel).
