    no advantage, just different setup.

clocking has now been accounted for...an adapter was made to rotate the bell on the gearbox...... we rotated it.... it was nice to see the shifter hole at about 3 degrees further clockwise then the cylinder openings - in AE86 4AG engines sits at 3 degrees down on the left hand side.

This pretty much means further progress is happening........

    A 2nd adaptor?
'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!

heh... not really... this one just screwed to the current adapter... and the other side had a machined round protrusion to fit the bell on and make the bell rotatable so that he could be SURE of the clocking......

I'll know more in a few weeks......

The case adapter is finished, the new input shaft is finished.

Right now, we've taken measurements to see how much we can shorten the shifter housing. I expect it to be installed in my "new" AE71 sometime this spring!

The modified AZ6 was originally designed to be fitted into an AE86... in the 3 years this project has been on going, I've built an AE71. Whether shortened for the AE86, or the AE71... the hope is to get the shifter inside the car in front of the section of reinforcement seen below between the 5" and 7" marks.

    So to summarise...

You've created a kit that adapts ANY AZ6 gearbox, to a T50 bellhousing, and also have or are working on other bits and pieces to make life easier...?

How much for this adaptor and modified input shaft? Postage to Aus??? I've got my eyes on an AZ6 box, but I didn't want to buy it until I knew I could do this conversion without too much custom work on my end.

    Cheers,
    Nader

Dan, check out Miata/MX5 shifters - they were more forward mounted of all the AZ6 boxes I looked at recently.

Your monopod goes out this coming week.....

Actually, the guy doing the components is Rob Golden, owner Pineapple Racing(Mazda builder). We are using a Miata box......

The parts as of now..... a machined billet aluminum end case for the AZ6, that accomodates an "A" to T50 bell housing.

The input shaft is longer by about 33 mm to compensate for the added length the adapter adds

MX5 is actually quite far back, when I did this conversion I used an RX8 extension housing with minor mods, moves the gearlever about 140mm forward.

    OVER 3 years, and $10,000.......

Ok, it is finished. The box is re-assembled - as you can see in the crappy cellphone pic - I'll get better photos later this week.

This one, being the prototype, has 2 adapters - the front seal wasn't accomodated in the first machining - so the extra plate accomodates the front seal... *IF* this goes into production these 2 adapters will be cast as one.

Even though this is a bad photo... anyone who knows their T50 input spline recognizes that shaft coming from THIS AZ6...

Well.... my little project is mostly done, this modified AZ6 is going in Surreptitious (my 4AGE powered AE71 ). It is now just a bucket of cash(cost of production) away!

How much??? As I stated, there is already nearly $10,000 in it already, and to tool up to make 25 casting, and then to bring those casting to a 5 angle CNC machine to have the VERY detailed innards shaped PERFECTLY... and then to have 25 NEW input shafts made... the sum NEEDED is $15,000!!!

That is $15,000 MORE, on top of the $10,000 already invested...... Just too make the first 25 "kits"!

the 2 parts to convert the AZ6 will cost $1500.00 You supply the trans, and the labor

Interested???? Email Rob Golden [email protected] prop of Pineapple Racing (www.pineappleracing.com)

Btw... know other forum groups that serve rwd 4AG folks... pass it on. We need to have at least 25 people truly interested ($$) to put this into production
