    Oh.. So 22R --> 18R Auto [RA40] ISN'T that simple then..?

    If I use the 22R mounts does that overcome the difference?

    I'm not looking for a racing car, just a get around car.. The 18R is pretty smokey apparently, but if I need to put rings in an engine it might as well be a 22R IF it is easy enough to slot in..

    Can anyone think of a 4speed non electronic box that'll bolt onto a 18/22R engine?

    a w40 or w45 will do the job for ya
    heres some specs on them (thanks to brett_celicacoupe)

    W40
    4-speed transmission offered in base model vehicles.

    Ratios:

    First Gear: 3.287:1
    Second Gear: 2.043:1
    Third Gear: 1.394:1
    Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    Reverse: -4.091:1
    Applications:

    1978-1981 Toyota Celica

    W45
    Little information is available for the W45 but service documentation from around 1980 lists it as being the 4-speed variant of the W55. It was used in Toyota RWD cars from around the same year.

    The W45 was comprised of all aluminum alloy.

    Ratios:

    First Gear: 3.566:1
    Second Gear: 2.056:1
    Third Gear: 1.384:1
    Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    Reverse: -4.091:1
    Applications: ~1980 RWD Toyota Cars

    why has no one suggested the 3rz?
    i think a 2.7 litre 4 banger would be perfect here
    can buy one out of a crate with 1200 HP...
    or just get a standard and enjoy the torque

    22R can be fit into an RA40... never said it was a bolt in. TA23 xmember is the easiest way to overcome the front sump arrangement in an RA40, then grind off old mounts and install new mounts (welding required). Wiring I found not too bad, engine bolts to your existing box (The A40 from the RA60 is a 3+OD - ie 4speed and non-electronic), and with some hose manipulation you dont need to change the radiator or anything. Also the battery is already on the correct side (unlike the RA60) so an air box can fit in fairly easy by moving the coil etc.
    So 22RE -> RA40 isnt too bad
    18RG -> RA60 is a lot more of a PITA

    I don't know if he till frequents here, but I can find you similar pics... It's just the sump cut-away to get over the crossmember, he's just hit it with a hammer...
