Question The Great Intake Debacle - Creative Inlet Piping for 4AGZE

    Hey guys,

As some of you may have seen... my engine bay now looks something like this:

    My problem now lies here:

As you can see, that pod filter is now sucking nothing but engine-bay spec air.... There is no room underneath the WTA intercooler for a decent sized solid pipe to run. My mates suggestion was to "milotin" and enclose the pod filter and feed a few 2" diameter aggi pipes to it with the ends running off to odd places (behind headlight, under car etc.)

Also, out of interest.... are 4AGZE inlet manifolds (well the bit that the pod filter bolts onto) reversable? As in can i simply swing the thing around?

    Input is greatly appreciated

any point in trying to run some ducting from the front bar underneath the i/c piping to the pod

Yeah.... if i enclose the pod that's what'll happen. But I'm interested in any other schemes you guys may have

    That's incredible... ^O^
I'm no expert, but I don't see that being anything short of a complicated problem to fix while keeping the piping the way it is. (ie, not cutting, welding and bolting elsewhere).

Sorry if it's unhelpful, but to me it just looks crazy packed up there. Goodluck though.

PS. You may be able to extend the intake piping passed the coil packs (?) (and underneath the other piping) towards the front. Autobarn usually stock some good curves in chromed and stainless that can probably be cut to shape and fitted.

EDIT: Looking at the photo's, I think that may be a tall ask. I agree with getting whatever ducting you can manage there. Possibly some kind of ventilation system?

    shaker/scoop in bonnet...
or, sacrifice one of the air vents into the cabin.. and use the area in front of the widnscreen as air intake

Scoop will do nothing but evacuate hot air - that and cop magnet

Haha @ the second idea tho... but i LOVE my aircon haha...

Whats the point anyways really? Sure there are gains to be had but at the end of the day your water to air cooler is there and is going to cool the air that is made hot by the blower isnt it.

Either way i suggest maybe getting a flange to bolt onto the supercharger and running a pipe off the the drivers side and over the top of the top radiator hose to the front. Hopefully you should have enough room as long as you dont have the reserviors there or can move them out of the way.

not if the scoop is sealed to the pod

as for the air intakes... i mean the slotted areas in front of the widnscreen... you could lose the passenger side one, and box/duct it for air intake for engine .. stick a panel filter in there somewhere.. all good...

other thought.. you don't need to run round pipes for air.

you could run wide flat tubes (think modern room cooling systems) and have the filter at the front

Maybe even modify bonnet with a scoop and then have just the bottom half of an airbox with a panel filter in it and have the bonnet seal onto that. Only downside is rain

Ah, this problem again. My main solution for this was going to be to make a custom intake pipe which replaces the bend which the pod is currently attached to. I was going to run it down to behind the front headlight on the drivers side (i.e. basically where the IC piping used to run).
From memory it was going to have a few issues with the supercharger outlet, but im sure you can figure that one out. It also has to be custom made as the recirculation pipes will foul on the engine intake if its purely flipped 180* around.

Ill see if i can find an original shot of the engine bay and photochop it in.

    EDIT:

    Hella dodgy photochop.

how about putting a pipe downwards and running it all the way under the gearbox and around into the front bar/guard..

The E58 sits quite low in FWD configuration. I doubt you could get it through without either limiting suspension travel or having a really damn small pipe.

True, but at the end of the day, cooling 80c air vs cooling 40-50c air... I'd take the latter

Yeah takai, that might be a more permanent solution later on down the track, but sigh haha. There has to be an easier way in the mean time.

I just got off the phone with the guys at chasers and asked them if they could use a bit of offcut piping to point the pod upwards, so I can enclose it with something round and metal () and run 2-4 pieces of 2-3" diameter flexible plastic aggi pipe all over the place (straight down, under the WTA intercooler, off to the side etc.)

The wide flat tube ala. Mitsubishi magna idea is a fairly good one, tho fabricating it would be a bitch (have to just steal it off a magna lol)

If you are getting chasers to do it why not just get them to weld up a 2 piece section to put it to the front of the engine bay. Surely it will be far easier than fabricating somethign to fit in that gap...
