    thats completely stupid.
    reco is like $120.
new stems, guides, valves and seats should still be less than 1K..

    nice "friend"

don't spend 1K on the head.

find out what is wrong with head, and what caused it. they are very hardy engines, so to have something go that badly wrong, something is fucked.

get second hand head, get it recod for $120ish (sydney brake and clutch in alexandria ) and then do compression test, then fix what is wrong....

less spending, less typing, more thinking.

edit: to put it bluntly.. the motor is probably rooted. how did you not see the lack of coolant before you bought it?
don't skimp on checking the motor out properly and thoroughly. don't depend on the "mate" mechanic. check the compression, check for leaks, with the car running, check the radiator for leaks..

oh, that white stuff could well be Chemiweld

i was gonna get the original head machined etc and get new valves etc
i think i got told the machining alone was gonna be about 500 then labour and parts etc at most should be 1g at most
    probs less

    skim head $ 40
reseat valves and valve seats $80 (if valves are farked, second hand replacements would be shit all)
how much more machine work can you do to a 4k head unless performance is in mind?
maybe the head is corroded and thats whats gonna take the money or something? sounds like your getting stooged to me

    but... why?

you can probably get second hand head for free (or put a 3K head on for free increase in compression ) and then spend $150 on reco and new seals.. and thats it.....

thats abotu all it is worth also

if i were you, i'd pull the block out at same time and check bearings and pistons...

if you need new valves.. the rest is probably worse
