I'll check it tonight and confirm it's the case, it could well be that the rubber layer was quite thin and not as visible as the ZE pulley it replaced. I have been known to be wrong

dose? depends i guess on where the bov was positioned and where the throttle body is in relation to it (before or after).

Not too familiar with the GZE setups but maybe because the clutch disengages between shifts? not like a turbo where pressure is constant. ???

If the bov is after the throttle body you will get very little noise, if any. You wouldn't even need a bov on the standard setup.

Also the clutch doesn't disengage between shifts, when you back off the gas the clutch stays ingaged for 5 seconds, so it doesn't switch on and off all the time around corners, gear changes and what not.

It's cried ENOUGH, time to do a new one, better, stronger, faster!
First I've seen a snapped crank from the nose, early mx5s were known for such dramas.

I guess a for sale ad in in order:
    4agze not running
made good power when in car
only driven by my grandpa, NEVER off the limiter under the bridge sideways at calder
    needs new crank

its a common problem with the old 90's 1.5 carby lancers....they tend to do it....round the 150k mark......then its time for a new motor.....

Pfft, but that's just a lancer.. What's a new motor worth in one of those? 25 to 30 cents?

perhaps.. but either thats correct and im in for some hassle or it isnt. I had a wobbly crank pulley on my gze (non s/c though. gze block running turbo) for too long a period! inexperience meant i didnt know what it was. until it was taken off and found that the pulleys keyway slot had cracked and running around (including drift days) with this wobbly pulley had manged the keyway... i got it filed a little bit and managed to get a new key fitting 'snug' in there. whacked on a ge pulley and its been running sweet since.

i'd say the effect of the s/c + pulley at angle?

Not all of them are like that - For example my RWD had a thin rubber ring (that I didn't know it had) and I had a lot of trouble getting it to run properly when it got the Motec.
It's a long story, but the outer ring, where the fanbelt runs on, had come loose on the inner pulley and backed itself off a good 30deg.
So I was trying to time the engine with it a good 30deg retarded ....
The old screwdriver down the plug hole trick to get a rough TDC and the timing mark was waaay out.

So anyway, the point is to be careful, it may well have a rubber insert that you can't see, and it may well be out of alignment.

I have broken a Mazda engine at the same part of the crank, the blower belt was not over tensioned (spring load auto tensioner), the water pump was run off the cam belt and the only other A/C belt was for the alternator, the only thing I could put it down to was the crank nut was over tightened when I put on the custom pulley (I didn’t use a torque wrench) or the pulley I made was not machined right?

Motor ran for 6 month before it failed.
Hope you get on the road again soon.

I would be VERY careful turning the crank without the cams turning you mite bend a Valve, if it has not all ready when it snapped?
    My motor did.
