I was saying that a number of people think that RT142s come with W58s (as opposed to your W55).
I'm aware of what the ratios are![]()

[QUOTE=wilbo666]I don't have first hand experience on that, but I'm lead to believe otherwise...
Found this on here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_W_transmission
The W55 appears to be a base reference point for gear ratios that Toyota used to fine tune later models of the W-series.
W55 Ratios:
First Gear: 3.566:1
Second Gear: 2.056:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.85:1
Reverse: -4.091:1
W57 Ratios:
First Gear: 3.285:1
Second Gear: 1.894:1
Third Gear: 1.275:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.861:1
Reverse: -3.768:1
Unlike in the W58 the 5th/overdrive gear set was changed to create a smaller rpm drop between 4th & 5th gears so as to remain close to the overdrive ratio seen in the other boxes.
The rest of the transmission remains unchanged.
W58 Ratios:
First Gear: 3.285:1
Second Gear: 1.894:1
Third Gear: 1.275:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.783:1
Reverse: -3.768:1

The w58 has a steel sandwich plate, AFAIK - other w5x boxes don't. This should be a good way of identifying a w58 with a magnet, unless I'm missing something.
I thought the rona's have the W55 but depends because like everything there so many bastardised ronas around because of the IRS and Live rear models.
Given that 4th is quite clsoe to 5th I'd assume they are actually a W55 or 57.
If in doubt power out
Some W55's also had steel sandwitch plates.Originally Posted by Stefan
And not all W58s have steel sandwitch plates (MA61 for example has a W58 and an alloy sandwitch plate, early MA70s also have alloy sandwitch plates).

w-55 trannys have steel housings, w-58 is aluminum. The cross member also is approx 2" further back on the w-58. My 77 Celica came with a w-55, last spring I changed to a w-58. It seems to have longer gears, and my speedo now reads about 20kmh faster than I am going. I think maybe they went with the 58 after 84.

Wow, you really need to change your speedo gear...Originally Posted by 77tback

Wrong. You're comparing W50 with W55/7/8.Originally Posted by 77tback
Sorry guys, my first post and I'm giving bad info. Yes it likely was a W-50 trans. The fire wall plate says A-40 if that helps. Yes some day I will try to get a closer speedo gear for my new trans. I just threw it in when my orig trans locked up. My Celica is my sole transportation in the summer. A buddy had given the trans to me about 12 yrs ago and said this will fit your car and will never blow. So far so good.
Sorry again for the bad info and will double check befor posting.

W58 also comes in both alloy and steel sandwich plates. The steel one is meant to be stronger from what ive heard and read but i havent had either open for comparison.
Heres what this site says about strength
