i would be checking your dizzy cap.... sounds silly, but there are 3 different dizzy caps... you will see what i mean with the 2 small bolts that hold it onto the dizzy, they slightly vary where #1 lead starts on the cap..

the only way i found to get a setup i had right... was try the different caps.. and eventually i got one that i could put one of the bolts in... but the other one was not lined up with the other hole.. BUT it was the right setup... and i could finally have adjustment! retard to from 0 right to about 20-22 BTDC... i always run mine at around 18-20 though... smallports on the high side (due to the knock sensor)

ALL BIGPORT DIZZY'S WILL RUN WITH ANY BIGPORT ECU - you just need to be sure you have the right dizzy and cap combination...

if it's running at about 20 BTDC and still driving like a pig... check your coil...

on a side note - i have never been able to get a 4age to ping using a bit of extra base timing on the stock ecu... they just want to scream! just need to be sensible with it..

thanks everyone for replys, will check dissy this arvo for the dot on the gear and dimple mark on the housing for installation. am starting to think there may be some truth in andrew_mx83's post as i noticed a bit of metal broken off the tooth of one of the trigger wheel tips. if its a case of the trigger wheel only pressed on (no gudeon or keyway) its possible it could have impacted something causing it to shift.

timing belt timing marks arent the problem btw - cam pulleys are aligned with dimples on the head, crank at TDC, timing belt correctly tensioned.

thanks again for all the responses!

[just to add, new leads, plugs, coil, rotor cap and rotor] - soon new distributer ;-)

if one of the teeth on the trigger wheel is damaged it may get a misfire or stumble... how bad is it?

im pretty confident that if you crank the wheel around a little bit your timing problem will be solved. shouldnt need to replace the dizzy unless the wheel itself is knackered.

i have a spare 4ag dizzy here, not sure what "type" it is, but it came out of this motor (ae82 seca):
There is no substitute for PUBIC inches
