Default 1JZ Harmonic Balancer hitting rear cover (now with pics)

When taking the engine apart I noticed mine has moved back and has put a nice be groove in the cover over time.

Will it have any adverse effect on anything does anyone know?. It has worn a groove but is still free moving.

More to the point what caused it move back?

Was the belt guide missing from it?

I have no idea. I'm thinking maybe there was meant to be a rubber spacer behind it or something that normally kept it from hitting the plastic cover.

It just seems it is sitting further back than it should be. Saying that the new accessories belt went on fine and doesn't foul on anything.

Its the same as a 2 J one , they seperate after time and you will need a new one , simple as that , leave it and you will be asking for trouble .seems they last for about 10 years

balancer coming apart at 7000rpm and literally going thru the bonnet and doing damage to anything within a 50m radius
    JZX83+ FMIC+ Twin 2.5" dumps to 3"+ FCD+ 2800rpm stallie+ 14psi - LSD - good tyres = 12.85 @105.58

The balancer (crank pulley) is not broken, chipped etc. It just sits to far back. From reading the US forums it seems there is normally rubber behind it that keeps the distance from the cover to the back of the pulley in check. I'm presuming this has perished thus the pully is sitting back a bit.

Anyway has anyone priced a new on from Toyota before, or know of any good aftermarket options?

    cambelt1 and MrDOHC are right...

It is a rubber isolated pulley

The inner section and the outer section are isolated by rubber...when the rubber fails then the two sections can come apart....

It sounds like the rubber has failed in yours! (and do you really want it coming apart at 7k+ rpm? )

    Cheers

i just bought an underdrive pulley for like 30 bucks from ebay.

its all alloy and doesnt have any rubber section (presumably it doesnt need to be balanced because its a fraction of the weight)

my brother joel (bigworm) bought the same kit and his seem to be working opk, might be a good alternative it gives more teh powarz too!

Sounds interesting!..can you link me to the one you brought on ebay?

Also can you use the standard accessories belt with it still?

Not to rude but you dont want to run any other pulley on a JZ thats not harmonicly balanced in design , look up crank walk on these motors from non standard pulleys or clutches
, factory original is about $350 , the best option for sure.

Agreed. There's a reason it's called a "harmonic balancer" and not just a "pulley".
