layshaft needle bearings and shaft. they are often rooted
Hey guys, got a 78 KE30 which is a work in progress, about 5-6 months ago i sourced a KE55 5-speed (k-50) bolted it all up and it was good no noises or anything,
Then about 2 weeks ago it started to make like a wierd noise coming from the gearbox, just above the gearstick, first i thought this might have been the uni's on there way out, got my tailshaft reconditioned, put it back in and it still made the noise..
Then took the car to a transmission place and he drove the car and reckoned the gearbox was fine?, but it makes a really bad noise, (metal against metal noise) when the car is lugging or under engine braking.. The box doesn't crunch or anything so i've rulled out syncro's..
Can anybody shed some light on this for me and give me some things to check?..
Any help will be appreciated,
Cheers Trent![]()

yup, the main shaft is the one with all the gears and synchros on it. the layshaft is the shaft that has all the fixed gears on it (mostly one long piece with 4 or 5 gears on it)
the layshaft has 8at least in the 4 speeds) a set of needle bearings at each end. the shaft itself chews out, and then you get excessive movement of the layshaft, and it eats things out quickly.
you can flip the shaft end to end and recut the end locater thing (grind so it sticks out), or 180deg and reuse the other side.. (so the previous thrust side is facing away) but best idea would be to source a new shaft and bearings.....
some shafts i have seen have more than 1mm wear!!!
then again, it could be something completely different![]()

Ford T56 boxes make grinding noises stock.
When you changed boxes did you play with the clutch ?
Yes, I changed the whole flywheel and clutch over off a spare 4K i had lying around because it had a near new clutch on it..
