Of course, as Brad said he is also looking into an aftermarket ECU, etc as well.Originally Posted by Norbie

So now we're talking SC14, plus custom brackets, custom pulleys/tensioner, custom inlet piping, aftermarket ECU, probably larger injectors, dyno tuning... all of that could very easily get you close to the cost of a 1G.
I'm not saying a supercharged 22R can't work or that it's necessarily a bad thing in the end, I just don't see it as value for money when import engines are so cheap and easy to get.
Still, this is getting off topic. Good luck with the project, I'm sure it will rip a decent skid.![]()

Norbie is on the money for a cost benefit point of view. There is allot of custom fabrication and experimenting required to build an engine, that in Australia at least, has not been overly done. That and that reason alone was the point for me building one. Something different. You may of may not have the time, money or equipment to build a reliable SC 22RE, but you will get more than enough help from people that will want to see you pull it of. Go for it mate, the 22RE's are a tough little bugger and can make decent power.![]()

Matt in Cananda, used to be on the Old Celica Club list, made a 22RZE a few years ago. Used a yank roots-style blower IIRC, lost of custom stuff, and I think one of those DIY aftermarket ECUs (forget the name).
does the 22re have to be forced induced to be any good?
What would make a good combination of mods and still keeping it (a) NA and (b) cheaper than replacing the engine.
Personaly i was thinking maybe extractors, DIY port and polish and webber carb and ofcourse tuned afterwards.
Are there any better bolt on heads for this engine?
And are there any high compression pistons that can be used?
Iv also just had an idea... is it posible to machine and surface grind the head in order to increase compression ratio if pistons arn't available, or is this just crazy?
In the US they frequently use 20R heads on the 22R block, apparently they flow much better. In fact there are quite a lot of bolt-on upgrades for the 22R over there (check out LC Engineering's web site) but it sure ain't cheap.

yep but its not just as easy as bolting the head on.. it bolts on but the EFI dosent..
thought i would put this up, a mate Matt from the US with a RA65 (RA60 with 22re)
has a LC Engineering Supercharger.. hes actually done alot to his celica so its a good
