    Default 18rg conversion ra28 celica

Has any one done this conversion or knows how hard it will be as i am planing on to do my 18rg engine up? What will the costs be? Any other way to acheive 200 plus BHP

The 18RG block can be bored to 2200cc (92mm) or stroked to 2400cc (using a modified 20/22R crank). No the 18RG head will not bolt on a 20R/22R block! The stroker crank is not recommended. Aside from the very expensive to modify to fit the 18RG block, it seriously cuts into the revving characteristic of the Twin Cam. The 18R blocks did not change that much, but installing into the later model pick-up and Celica will need the newer block that have the extra engine support holes embossed on the sides of the block. Because of the wider variety of models the engines originally came in, there are 4 different oil pans, six different engine brackets. Fitting into specific applications will be a matter of matching the oil pan configuration to the original engine; and the engine brackets to the width of the crossmember. On the older Celicas with the 18R engine- it is a bolt on by using the pan and brackets off the original engine.

Cost will be mammoth, and it will still be a 30 year old dog motor.
With all that described work done to the 18R block you still need a dencet fuel system, so add a few thousand to any engine shop quotes.

Also, 200HP will not happen without radical cams and head porting.

If you want real power for real cheap, 1G-GTE is "easy" to put in.

What sleeka said. No matter how much we love the RG, one that puts out 200bhp will not be the best on the street.

If you're looking at spending wads of cash on an NA 4 cyl, have a look at putting in a Beams 3sge.

If you're on a budget, can't go past the 1GGTE.

you your looking at a massive build
going as far as re-sleving blocks and 2grand port jobs would be required,
3S can do that sorta power NA
or you could build a "warm" engine with decomp and a SC14 and EFI setup
that would make 200HP abit cheaper

Majorclod has it a 3S would be better if yu going to do a blank cheque engine build
or a alloy block 2L BDA would be nuts, but not cheap

but deffently the 1GGTE deserves a look, i personaly would go GZE to be different

If you look at engines like a SR20DET or 4AGZE 20 years newer and dont produce 200HP in stock trim

200hp out of an 18R-G actually wouldn't be that difficult or expensive if you go turbo.

Seriously, norbie isnt wrong. With an 18R-GU (the most common available), you have a stock compression ratio of 8.7:1, perfectly suited to a turbo application. Use a T28 of some kind for a super responsive engine that will confidently produce the 200HP you are aiming for.

Of course, this is assuming you convert to EFI using the 18R-GEU gear and use an aftermarket ECU of some kind. Microtechs are cheap as chips these days.

heck, my stockish 18R-GE produces 80rwkW... which is around 150HP or so at teh crank, so you'd need buggerall turbo to make 200hp
    ...... butt scratcher?!

Yup - small modern-ish turbo, low boost, good tune - you'll easily acheive 200hp with oodles of torque and excellent drivability. It will shit all over a built 200hp NA engine in every respect, especially cost!
