The 1JZ hydraulic pump is also the water pump (in case anyone still has doubts despite many confirmations).
To gut the hydro part you need to pull (at least) the front of the water pump off, and to do that you need to remove a good deal of the front of the engine. The *ONLY* advantage that I can see of gutting the hydro pump is that you don't need to purchase a new water pump (and pulley) - the work involved will be the same as, or greater than, replacing the pump with a new one.

Any power steering reservoir can be used as the reservoir for the hydraulic fan. The cooler for the fan fluid is generally a lot bigger than the power steering cooler - I'm not aware of anyone running the hydraulic fan without the cooler, so you're probably on your own if you want to try it without one.

As already stated, you can either run a reservoir in a loop, or just loop the high pressure outlet straight back into the pump inlet with some fluid in it - we've done it both ways and had no problems without running a reservoir - if anyone has had problems, please speak up.
Looping the hoses (with no reservoir) is by far the easiest way of addressing the issue.

You can remove the A/C altogether and run a shorter belt. The shorter belt will end up having more contact area with the crank pulley and the power steering pulley (not a bad thing).

I have a couple of hydraulic fans surplus to my needs if you're mildly tempted to try one.

As an aside, the 1UZ hydraulic pump also serves as a belt idler, putting the belt in contact with a larger proportion of the crank pulley and A/C pulley. The belt could be run straight from the crank to the A/C at the expense of belt contact - has anyone done this with acceptable results? (ie no belt slip)

I think its always been a case of people doing this, but not putting enough oil in the system, and the bearing runs dry.
I know of a few times this has happened on Lextreme.

Couple of guys on Lextreme have done it.
    A/C to Crank to ALT.
There must only be about 60deg wrap on the crank, but they claim there is no slippage.

Hey all, cheers for the info..

The main reason that i wanted to remove it is that i dont have a hydro fan, it didnt come with the motor, i also dont have a reservoir, i DO have a couple of thermos which i have been using on my 7m..

I would be happy to run the engine fan if i had one, im sure i can make up a reservoir quite easily..

Mos, how much would you be after for the fan?

    Not a lot.

You would also need a reservoir (not much of a problem).

If you want to run it in factory fashion, you would need a radiator that has a temperature sensor for the fan ECU (or just the sensor), and the fan ECU.

The factory controller adjusts the fan speed based on the radiator water temperature.
You can also run the hydro fan in conventional thermo operation by applying 12V to the solenoid, using some sort of thermostat (factory or aftermarket).

In either case, the hydro fan will draw a lot more air through the radiator than any electric fan.

Mate, i've removed the aircon and oil lubrication gaylord engine excuse for a fan setup.

Use a PK1000 belt, ((I think) Off a Daewoo or so) if you remove the aircon compressor. I'll double check the belt when i get my Soarer back.

Cool, cheers.. ATM it seems that i will keep the engine fan pulley thing, but run my thermos, i will just make up a res and run some lines to it, i cant be arsed setting up all the electrical crap to run the engine fan.

I am going to get a microtech ecu installed anyway so i can run one of the outputs to run the thermos, or simply have them as i do at the moment with just a simple on/off switch..

Dunno yet but cheers for all the feedback..

Soarer Dood- i would be keen to find out what belt that is, coz it looks like i will simply remove the aircon and keep the rest..

Just to add something else into the equation

You mentioned you wanted to put your car on a diet...you could use the hydro water pump as a power steering pump, this would allow you to remove the PS pump and the AC compressor...(weight)

    Just an idea

    Cheers

Not a bad idea, if it will work.. Cheers.. Can anyone else add to this.. will it work or not? anyone done it etc...

Yes the car will go on a diet, most of interior will be stripped, sound deadening removed, most of the wiring removed..( stuff such as auto computer and loom, tems BS,) and aircon lines.. I will also be looking for another bonnett i can use to cut up and use on the track..

Also, on a side note.. Half cage on the way!!

    Cool, cheer mate.

I will be getting rid of the air con, but keeping the rest at this point.. I will just run some lines to a reservoir of some type..

Unless i decide to go for the power steering removal and use it for that.. Dunno yet..
