    Default P51 & W5X shifters

Do these gearboxes share the same shifters? ie, are they interchangable from one to the other. The reason I ask this perculiar question is because I have found someone that makes a shortshifter kit for a P series box but not a W series as yet?
I was hoping they could be interchangable and hence be able to use it.

    Hi,

I'll check my EPC tomorrow. It has the W50 and P51 gearboxes in it. The best the EPC will tell me is if the part numbers are different - it won't show detailed diagrams that may have slight differences between the parts. However, if the part numbers for these components are the same for the W50 and the P51 then you'll probably be okay.

I'll post tomorrow when I find it and let you know.

Edited; To change W55 to W50. Dunno what I was thinking when I wrote W55 - as I meant W50. Sorry about that.

Yup, that was a looooong time ago. Interest actually started on the old forums and Wilbo didn't have time to do it so acmtt did a W58/R154 short shifter group buy for us. Worked a treat too. The thread can be found here. Please note it has finished and your best bets of finding one are either Dellows (yes that mob) or putting a wanted ad up. R154 shifters fit the W5x series box's too. I have confirmed this with an R154 short shifter i bought a while ago from an importer, Just Jap i think? Good luck with it.

I can tell you that the P51 and the W50 shifters are exactly the same.I had a P51 behind my 18RG powered 104 Corona many many years ago and the P51 threw the synchros so I replaced the box with a W50 and used the shifter out of the P51.So I hope this has cleared things up.
    Cheers Brett.

    Hi,

Well there you go... the Crown Custom used the P51 and if Brett's done the change then you should be fine.

According to the EPC the parts look identical, but a few parts have different numbers, but these differences are mostly for later models. Most of the parts are identical up to around Aug 75.

I dont see how it would work as the shifter pictured has four mounting bolts and a center pick up and my W55 has an off center pick up and six mounting bolts.
If it fits let us know as i too am after a short shifter..

    Hi,

Brett and I are talking about the W50 gearbox, not the W55. The P51 and the W50 used the same external housing and the shifter was basically the same. However, the internals are totally different.

Here is the P51 repair manual. It has some pics and diagrams that may assist you....

Here is the diagrams of the T50, W40, W50 and P51 gearboxes. This will give you an idea of what the shifter parts are like and you can see the similarity between the W50 and the P51......

Oh, the above links are 56k killers.
