Default 20v sounds like a diesel

hey i just picked up a ae92 20v silvertop and it sounds like a diesel.

my friend told me it might be the vvt seal?

is there any truth about this?

everthing else is fine with it. i gave it a full service just to rule out anything oil quality related.

    im stumped

Is it running on 4 cylinders? does it have an exhaust leak?, is the engine vibrating more than usual?

im guessing its running on 4cylinders. it still goes really good performance wise so i guess it is .how would you tell noises etc? i cant see a exhaust leak. and no vibration. i tell you i have no clue what this could be. i have done the whole car service oil etc, coolant etc, brakes etc, grease etc. i checked the coolant and its not a oil leak.

the only thing might be that 3rd gear syncro is crunching not bad tho. still i wouldnt think that it could be that?

    ehehhehehe.

silvertop, if its still running on factory ECU, (AFM still retained) then you have a vacuum leak.

if it chugs, carries on, idles rough, but is fine higher up, while the motors under load, then its a vac leak.

The vvt cam pulley is known to clag up, once this happens it goes all clackety clack.
You should be able to isolate the noise fairly easily.
This happens because people tend to skip services in Japan, good news if you are dumping the car in a few years, bad news for people buying them later down the track

Sounds like a faulty VVT pulley.

    Under VIDEOS

Go to the "testing faulty vvt" clips 1 and 2 and check to see if it similar.

$300-400 for a new AE101 intake pulley from toyota.

Blacktop item is closer to $800.
