Default jap rwd manifold on smallport head

    gday

i've pulled off the blower on my gze, we're fitting the turbo and whatnot.
basically i was wondering why it is you cant use the jap rwd inlet manifold on a smallport head?

it appears to fit up fine, so i was just wondering why it is that you cant use it.

i have searched, but couldnt find a reason.

    muchos gratzia

Have a look at the size of the ports...

Doesn't fit. Either make a manifold, or alter a smallport FWD one. Sell the RWD one and have more cash in the pocket anyway...

Are you sure you've got a smallport ZE there?

Take a look at Bill Sherwoods site, he has some pictures comparing the two.

You can use the RWD intake manifold. T3 makes an adapter plate, I have seen it on a running engine!
you'll probably get better flow with a cut and shut FWD intake.
So if you don't already have a RWD intake then search for a FWD one and pay to get it cut and shut!
and if you already have a RWD intake have a think about wether u wanna spend the extra money on an adapter plate or sell it, and get a FWD cut and shut. An adapter plate is $220, and a cut and shut costs about $80?

there ya go, AJPS sells them, $220!
http://www.ajps.com.au/corolla.html (listed near the bottom of the page, under engines + electrics)

If you need a FWD inake I have one sitting around.
    Goodluck!
    Cheers.

judging by those photo's it looks to be a bigport head.. which is good news i guess.

but now im worried that i've been sold a non gze block. is there any way to identify the block? when i got it, it was bare with just the gze inlet manifold bolted to it & supercharger rocker covers

    shit.

    thanks guys, appreciated.

A bigport ZE should have a knock sensor located on the inlet side of the block, it's just under the port for no 4.

Do you have a T-VIS plate, apparently* without one, you'll have issues with the manifold.

    * - Never tried this myself.

    ah your a legend mate

i was looking at my old motor, which i *thought* was a gze, but has no knock sensor

    the new one has one

i dont have a tvis plate though, (dont know much/anything about em at all except that they shut a port off to increase velocity) but i thought it was only the n/a's which need em ?

the inlet manifold doesnt actually say tvis either by the way
    but yer, i dunno.

also, when you say t-vis plate, is this the sandwich plate which people refer to?

Yeah - If you line up the manifold to the head, you'll find there is an area where there is SFA overlap - You'll have a bastard of a time getting it to seal.

I just realised I have all the bits in the shed to show you what I mean...

    Without T-VIS plate:

Notice just under the injector hole, you'd be lucky to have 1mm before the port.

    With T-VIS plate:

    All seals up nicely.

If you want to go without one, you really should get those 'valleys' welded up and ground back. If you get a T-VIS plate and just remove the butterflies, it should all be sweet.

thats exactly what i have done. i got a tvis plate for next to nothing, removed the butterflys and now it seals 100% better.

    highly recommenced

been trying to tell people that for years (not useing the t-vis plate = not sealing 100%), thanks for showing it ben.

    Ben,

i think your little post there regarding not using T-VIS plate and impending sealing issues is worth of FAQing.

Can you please post it as a new thread as a kind of guide so i can move it for you?
