ToyMan, I agree.
I was EXTREMELY pleased taking my engine to this guy.
talking to him, I could talk to him for 30minutes every time I called him for something small..
he would usually try and make time to answer all my stupid questions
just later in the piece, when I was getting edgy to have it before Christmas, where all parts were ready, and waiting to be assembled, just sitting for 3weeks.
I am all for listening to them. that is the main reason I did n ot build the engine myself. sure I could have done it. but they have years and years of experience, and it should have been alot easier than this ^_^
I will question them on what they think (mainly about the headgasket) but will go with what they think is best, ive let them try and disassemble the oil pump drive shaft..

I would expect the better experts would encourage you to ask questions as well as offer information i.e., share in your enthusiasm. Ultimately your paying for the time. It's an educative process too and no good teacher would consider a question 'dumb' (well not often). It's experts who get high and mighty that one should be wary of.
