Default ok...now next stage, EXT WASTEGATE MOUNTING POSITIONS?

well now that i have my gate,

im trying to fing a place to mount it... does it matter with gates how they are mounted?...ie lying flat,?

im very pressed for room to move with it....and can see the only place to mount it will be lying flat...

any hints or tips you have for mounting ext gates will be rewarded if i havent allready givin u love!

be very careful with how the gate pipe mounts to the main manifold.. so that it actually gets flow, and is not "shielded" ?

you would hope that the forces involved are greater than the gravity effect on the pistons..

heat shield it... choose position to maximise distance from damagable stuff.. then put radiant heat shields etc...

is it heavy? need a brace?

I'm about to head up to the workshop and continue making my manifolds...

    well.... no pics yet...

the mani is a low mount...., and where the collecter sits, ive had to modify it....move the T3 flange plate down a bit so that the wastegate pipe isnt sitting behind 3 pipes (sort of inside the collector....).

.....ie so it doesnt sit too high in the collector that it will only get directional flow of 3 cyl/pipes...

the gate is a 46mm, bit biger than the size of a coke can...so it will be braced up,

ive found a new spot, it will be siting upright..., tucked in between, clutch master cyl.....manifold and the firewall...above the steering box....

basically in the same position as the rear turbo on the stock set up...

The above turbosmart install guide has a good explanation of wastegate position, and the best position to put it.

and you'll be mounting at LEAST a single layer of alloy or steel sheet as a radiant heat barrier to the clutch master... ie, say 1" away from the clutch master (so that heat can't directly hit it from ANY part of the exhaust), and if you are feeling special (and safe) have a second layer 5-10mm further... you can join the two...

this will stop the clutch master from either boiling, melting or burning, and you from having no clutch at a very bad time

lying flat wont matter at all, make sure you vent from the collecter, in the following dodgy explaination if possible

if you imagine the turbo manifold as a Y the collector is the bottom bit of the Y, the turbo entry is one of the top bits of the Y and the gate is the other top bit of the Y.

if you can, plumb the waste pipe seperately as this will give you better boost control (with a muffler, as screamers sound gay) or plumb back into the dump a fair way back with a shallow entry angle.

also, buy maximum boost (the book by corky bell) if you dont have it already.

As a result of being glued to the cricket, and all the booze I got for Christmas, I got fuckall done this afternoon/evening. Here are some pics of the basic layout of the collector where the wastegate feed will be:

I'm not happy with the length of the merge going into the turbo flange, and will make a much longer pair tomorrow.

yeah, MUFFLED screamer is definately the way to go i would say, something to take the exhaust leak sound away, try it with no muffler first, then quieten or louden as you see necassary.

that turbosmart guide is a good one, here is a better version of my text description from that PDF

(stupid imageshack isnt working and file is too big to attatch so ill put it in later)

    EDIT:

its working again, so here is the pic
