Yikes! I don't know. I've got what I think is an MR2 3SGE bolted onto an '88 Celica 3SGE block and I just want to confirm that this is what it is.
have a pic of your engine?
this is a gen2 engine (turbo)
Non turbo is very very similar (remove the turbo basically)

I've just pulled it off the car caus I'm going to take it back to the wrecker caus theres too many things that don't fit. Here's some pics, I'd still like to know what the hell it is, caus it sure isn't out of a Celica, very close but certainly not out of anything between '85 - '89.
yup, thats a gen1 head. if your original engine was a gen2, a lot of your manifolds and water lines won't bolt up.

Ok, are you talking Gen 1 St162 Celica? As in '85/'86 gen 1 and '87-'89 gen 2?
85 to late 89 is gen 1
late 89 to 92/93 is gen 2
92/93 is gen 3

Gen 2 has the throttle body over the spark plug cables, so changing spark plugs would require the throttle body to be moved.. is that right?
also the spark plug wires are on the surface, so they're higher up than the Gen 1 head? sorry if it's wrong, coz i'd like to know as well, as i'm looking at one SW20 turbo MR2 (JDM)
Research has shown child in front seat causes accidents, accident in back seat causes child
Lance, are you talking about Celica 3SGE or MR2 3SGE caus I don't think they're the same?
The Gen1 3SGE was never available in the MR2.
josh i think he believes he has an MR2 Head on a Celica blockOriginally Posted by Joshstix
to clarify:
The above head is a gen 1 3sge head - the gen 1 3sge (in Oz anyway) only came out in the st162 Celica - all years from 85-89 with minor variations only (o2 sensor mounting and exhaust manifold)
You believe you have an mr2 head on your "any gen" 3sge bottom end - correct?
Well you're wrong to answer simply
For a detailed answer, read on:
SW20 Mr2's were the only mr2's released with 3sge's - there were two engine variants in these mr2's dependant on year of manufacture (for Australian released cars not imports)
89-93 models came out with the gen 2 3sge - which was similar to the above head with changes to the camshaft duration and the port shape (spacing and manifold stud mountings were the same as gen1)
94 onward mr2's came with the gen 3 3sge, which had a TOTALLY different head altogether - different cams, diffierent valve-train components and setup (shim under), and different port spacing, port shape, port size, and stud spacing - the above is definitely not a gen 3
now technically you shouldnt really refer to the above head as an "mr2 cylinder head" - because it could be from a celica (whether its an Aus released celica with a gen 1 3sge, or a JDM celica with gen 2, 3 & 4 3sge, being from an st182 & st202 celica respectively)
Hope this hasnt confused you more - if it has, read it again and it should make sense

Yes I know that's what he thinks, but it's a gen 1 cylinder head and MR2's never came with Gen 1 3SGE's therefore it's not an MR2 head.Originally Posted by trd3sg
I don't know what it is then, but it doesn't fit. The intake butterflys on the plenum don't line up with the intake ports, the water outlet on the distributer side it too big, overall it looks different to any of the Celica 3SGE's, but the Head to block mating surface matches. Doesn't matter now, I took it back and I've since found a 'Gold Top' 3SGE head that fits. Thanks for all the input though,
Cheers,
Peter.
