    Smile Diff Conversion for KE70

I am currently doing up a KE70 and the diff (4.8:1) is somewhat noisey so it probably needs replacing. Is there a diff that goes straight in? If not what is a better upgrade. Ive heard that KE70 diffs are crap.

T series diff from a T-18 or a RA40,RA60 fit also i think, then get a LSD centre for them.

Will The T18 or RA40/60 diff drum to drum bolt straight in or do I get the centres swapped?

RA40/60 will fit if you force them in. They are NOT a straight bolt in as the top mounts are out.

Anything that fits an ae86 will suit your application.

If you dont have enough money for a T series then a LSD centre Grab a welder and make a CIG locker, But be aware that this is illegal and takes time to get use to driveing a car with a locker.

T18 diff is your best bet, it's the same chassis so it will bolt right in. Then you have access to all sorts of LSD's for the T series centre.

    Lockers are sic,

but yes they are illegal, and will cause your car to understeer especially in the wet. But a little throttle aplication will fix that.

stock ke70 boar warner diffs are stong. it is only the planetary gears that are undersized, so get over sped and there fore break. the ring and pinnion and axles especially are very strong. much stronger than a t18 diff.

if youre on the cheap keep the borg and weld it. 4.3s are available for these also. welding cures the problem of the small planetary gears... they dont move anymore at all

t18 if you want something nice. infinate range of GOOD after market lsds. same can be said for ratios. well manitained set ups can even cope with 4a turbo power.

dont understand how people think T series lsds are expensive? maybe you cant get a true track ect.. but really they dont compare to the jap clutch style lsds. also when you buy them 2nd hand you usually get a nice ratio (4.3 or shorter).

Thank you all for your advice. CIG diff (welding) is not practical for a road or tarmac rally car. LSD would be great. Sorry for the typo on the ratio it is in fact 3.89. I checked the tag on the diff while doing a diff oil change yesterday. Using 50/50 ratio of Lucas 80/90 racing gear oil and Lucas oil stabiliser. Diff is now quieter but I suspect rear wheel bearings may be causing some of the noise. This I will look into further. Doing a full underbody check tomorrow night in preparation for next tarmac rally on 17 Feb.
