stuff it, found a few threads saying how shithouse they were and how hard they were to adapt, so yeah, dont worry.
tried to search, nothing specific found, so a little help would be appreciated.
I have access to an r31 (pintara) diff with disc brakes and was wondering:
1: how strong are these things?
2: how pricey and lsd's for these things?
3: how hard is it to adapt to the sprinter?
I havent done any measuring either, so if anyone knows the width off the top of their head, that would help too.
Thanks.

Must preface this by saying that I have never attempted to put a r31 diff (BW) into anything and have never had one apart or put a tape measure over it. So what I am providing is hearsay and my opinion based on that.
Phew.
The r31 diff in the skyline is much the same as that in a VL commodore and also in the 2 door sigma - scorpion I think it was called. Not real sure if the skyline and pintara is the same.
I understand that the width is ok for a ae86.
Now the turbo commodore and I think the v8 came with a 2way lsd. But the scorpion and the r31 Silhouette both came with a 4 way lsd. But I don't know if there was a change in axles. I get the feeling that you are looking at a similar strength rear end as the f series that we have been putting into ae86s and celicas.
The disk brakes are the same as the ones we have been using from a ST141.
Some people have indicated that the BW lsd clutches can get pretty ordinary after a bit of spirited use.
Also note that the r31 is 4 stud with the same spacing as the ae86, the dunnydoor is 5 stud. Not sure about the scorpion but my recollection is that it is 4 stud.

I think you mean 2-pinion, and 4-pinion. Although a 4-way LSD would be an interesting thing.Originally Posted by ddeane

My bad, bit of a brain fade - another senior's moment - I meant 1 way and 2 way -
1 way LSD full locks on acceleration
1.5 way lsd fully locks on acceleration and some on deceleration for more control on cornering)
2 way lsd fully locks on accel and decel

id say the easy option would be to use a T series diff and put ST141 avante disks on it. then grab a T series LSD (arent that rare) and whack it in.
if you cant find a T18 diff, grab a RA60 diff as they are identical apart from the panhard rod location.
hello
Pintara and r31 axles are different. Diffs may be as well.
Don't do it. I did this to my first sprinter, but you learn by your mistakes! Hilux (G) diff is a much better, and easier, choice. Heck, I even have a housing that has had the brackets etc. done to suit a corolla that hasn't been used.
yeah i said i wasnt going to do it in my second post, hehe
i think i'll go with either the volvo or hilux diffs.... steering towards volvo atm due to cost.
I had a pintara, diff whine was annoying, but it was strong! possibly same as old falcon? i had to replace the gasket, and it was idecntical to xf? ford.
ive heard of pple using them in much more powerful cars than r31 or vl, with no trouble, not sure on specifics etc but yeh
i wouldnt do it thoughunless it was out of a passage

You have not mentioned what motor you will have in front of the diff. If it is a 4ag and you are not putting out lots of hp (ie full on turbo) I would have thought that a t series with a lsd would be great. You can fit the Pintara discs that you have very easily to the T series diff.
Otherwise I would be looking at a F or G series. I have a F series and have not had any problems with a fairly high hp single turbo 1ggte. Also the Pintara discs will fit the F series diff. You also do not have a significant weight penalty over the T series. Big hp and savage 'skidding' go the G series, 'cos who cares about the weight.
I would also prefer the Toyota stuff to Volvo, one 'cos its toyota and two 'cos lsds are hard to get for volvos
Craig
picked up a volvo diff yesterday for 80 bux complete disc to disc..... how can you beat that??
4000GT,
Can you tell me what model volvo you took it from?
Cheers,
Chris.

volvo 240
1400mm disc to disc, no need for tailshaft modifications (according to the volvo diff thread) and has twin piston rear calipers.
hasnt it got some exotic stud pattern?
