the plastic can in the guard is an air bleed. it bleeds the air while you
fill the tank so air pockets dont cause fuel to blow out the filler or the pump continually click off.

And thanks for the advice guys, sounds like keeping it simple will always win out. I'll return it to stock and add the pump/surge tank.
