Replacment fuel tanks...

I did a quick search and didn't find anything on its own.

I was wondering if anyone has replaced their fuel tank with an aftermarket one, and if so, where did you get it cost etc.

I've got a mate who could make me a really good stainless tank with in-tank pump etc etc, but i have no idea about the legalities of it and I'm doing too much work to get held up on something like this.

Any ideas on what I should do? Stock tank is dead.

Buy another stock tank surely they cant be as expensive as making a new one.


Are you talking a tank to fit in the existing place, or a square aftermarket tank


One to fit in An existing place id go pay a visit to tjm or similar theve made a few tanks for my old man.
Square ones from just about any performance shop, mini truck/hotrod shop etc. there legal so long as they meet guidelines, rules and are mod plated.

You should ring an engineer and ask what brand tank etc you can buy with what fittings and where you can put it, and will he mod plate it.

I had a friend make up an alloy tank for my brother's RB30 Torana. Worked a treat.

An aftermarket or custom tank (even a surge tank) will need to be certified, it's all clearly explained in the above document.

I have an RCI 30L fuel cell in my car. Mounted in the boot. Got it second hand but as new for $150 which was cheap. Plastic one not alloy. Has all the fittings etc on there and make sure it has a sump area for the fuel to drain to naturally.

I'm just after a new(ish) tank to replace my current one. the car will be a daily driver too so it really needs to be a stock type tank for practical purposes.

Also I'd preffer a tank off the block thats suited to an RA28 1GGTE conversion, is there any issue with the stock tanks and dealing with EFI etc etc? I dont want to have to make a surge tank without knowing WTF I'm doing.

just buy one dude you can get surge tanks for like $60 on ebay, search the net for how to install it. Get a crappydoor fuel pump and some lines from repco and your pretty well set.

so leave a stock RA28 tank in there, cheapy fuel pump (i'm assuming that the holden ones are exturnal) and then hook it all up... Does anyone know what needs to be done with all the extra breather lines etc. I know the EFI they dont have them. so just plug the holes?

never plug holes to do with fuel, the vl pump is external yes, how many lines does it have from the fuel tank.... feed , return , breather. Anymore?

the stock tank has 4 lines which run into a plastic thing near the filler (evaporator?) which then runs down to another round thing in the engine bay, (seperator?? not sure which is which or what does what) A single line runs from the filler down to the tank, theres the main fuel line and a return.

From most EFI's i've delt with about 4 to many lines.

Any idea on what I need to do would be great.

You're confusing the fuel evaporative emission control system with fuel supply to the engine. 2 separate things.

There will be fuel filler, then fuel to the engine and a return line, and a line going to the charcoal cannister in the engine bay.

The plastic thing near the filler is probably an external evaporator as you suggest - it tries to convert fuel vapour back to a liquid and drain it back to the tank. Don't remove it. Whatever stays as a vapour is sent up to the charcoal cannister where a water is pulled and then it's fed into the inlet manifold under periods of high vacuum.

As you're upgrading to a 1ggte, you may as well replace the cannister in the engine bay with (a smaller one) from an EFI engine. You need a charcoal cannister to safely deal with the build-up of fuel vapour in the tank.

As for surge tanks and pumps - just mount an external EFI pump as low as is safe and keep the tank > 1/4 full.

Custom certified fuel tanks usually run about $10/L for Your basic rectangle tank, plus fitting, plus anything special.

My 85L tank was $1700 including fitting and certification.

what 'can' are you talking about? can you put up a pic - or a MSpaint drawing showing how and where's connected to the tank?
