stratified charge might be the way to go, but it is hardly as simple as filing a couple of grooves in your head, assuming each works i know which method i would be using!

props to you for giving this a go ben, as i said in your PF thread, keep us posted out the results!

Doesn't it have an inherent problem with the injector taking up valuable head real estate?
Some 4 stroke HPDI is done through injection ports in the cylinder wall. Orbital mainly applies Air Assisted DI to 2 -stroke engines and since two strokes _ussually_ only have a spark plug in the head its not a problem.
Nick - cool stuff, are you going to donate the hardware?
It already crossed my mind once to DI the AW11 .

    Cheers, Nick

Don't you fire the injector near TDC? That sounds like a bigger issue than dodging valves.

Ever thgouht about combining the spark plug and injector into one unit*?

    * - No idea how this would work, but it's probably possible...

Yep, Orbital tried once in the past..but gave up. It would be a ultimate way to go for sure, to add DI to an existing setup. I don't know all the reasons (technical) why this was abandoned.

Well put it this way, with a 200kpA air injection pressure you can't inject whenever you want (read 'must be well before tdc on compression stroke' - as opposed massive high pressure diesel injection?) Cheers, Nick

Have you got any pics of the side mounted injector? I'm having trouble visualising where you would mount it without causing ring sealing issues - I suppose you could go in diagonally above the top ring but then you'd have port interference problems.

I am really interested in this grouve theory also. Either way I cant do it to mine because a 20v blacktop has next to no squish area at all.

check that out, you should be able to do it on your 20 valve also, there should be some form of squish area somewhere.

well I have been doing some reading and I have found many people have tried this and have universally had good results. Not one person so far has tried it without sucess, interesting...

sam, only place i can really see for a groove in your head is between the exhaust valves, dunno if i would be keen on putting one there though.

and a question for Ben Wilson, what did you use to cut the grooves in your head there?

well I cant try it because I dont have any squish area. As for the groves the common concensus is that a triangular file is best. Ben I recomend widening those grooves.
