    Default Diffs For Ke30

    Hey peoples,

I just want some opinions on what diff i should put in my ke30.

I want to spend anywhere from $0 - $1500 on everything.

    Diff must have
Leaf Springs (Can have standard or Be welded on)
Size: Around 1365mm (Will Shorten If Needed)
    LSD (Aftermarket or Standard)
Disc Brakes with Internal Drum handbrake and cables(custom or standard)
4 Stud (Could get axels changed to 4 stud)
Preferably Toyota but Can be other.
    Easy to get parts for
    Also Easily Findable (Not Rare)

I have atm A t-series with Avante Discs on Rear.
I also have 4agte 150kw atw and looking for upto 240kw
Running T50 but im waiting on a Nites Bellhousing for a 4a-W5x gearbox

Options i have thought of is:

    R31 Diff (Disc brakes)
Hilux Diff with Custom Disc brake setup
Now just thought of an F-series diff shortened with altezza lsd and avante discs and calipers.?(possible?)
    Rep for helping
Any other things i should mention?

    Thanx very much,
    Adam

I have setup an R31 diff into a KE55 before. It is pretty easy, and already has disc brakes, and 4 stud axles (same pattern as KE30/55).

The R31 diff needs to be shortened, and from memory the one I did was shortened 130mm. Keep in mind tho that you might not need to shorten it that far, as it was done so to fit 8" rims under without rolling the guards. Measerments I took recently of a KE30 panel diff was 1355mm face to face of the brake drums. This would make an R31 diff 1485mm long.

If you need any more details, I will kindly help out.

yer the r31 diff is a tops idea because it doesnt weigh as much as the hilux diff and while hilux diffs are usually 30 spline, its a bit of overkill.

the 31 diff is 28 spline, which is plenty strong to hold the power your asking for.
downsides are that an lsd for it will be a tad expensive, but there are decent options for gearsets like 3.08, 3.55, 3.7, 3.9, 4.11 (from pintara) and whatnot.

getting leaf spring hangers onto it is pretty cheap, i was quoted $200 or $250 if i removed the axles myself.

getting it shortened will be a bit expensive tho. some hilux ones dont need shortening, also hilux diffs have a wider range of ratio's and different locker's are readily available

maybe look into a diff from a hi-ace or lite-ace, i remember someone telling me that they're quite good, 30 spline and lots of them have lsd.

There is an AE71 Panel Van here on these forums fitted with an F-series diff (which can be had with disc brakes) and a Torsen LSD.

It didn't need to be shortened to fit so it would probably be fine for an earlier model rolla too depending on the offset of your wheels.

I was thinking of going the F-series diff because from what i have read, i can fit my avante discs and calipers on, i dont mind if i have to shorten it.

However now thinking the R31 diff because it has dics already on there.

Do i need to get a certain type r31 diff? Or does all types of r31 gear bolt in. Anyone know if they are 2 pinion or 4 pinion?

    Thanx guys,

If you want an r31 diff, make sure it is from a skyline, not a pintara. The r31 skylines came with 2 diff ratios. 3.7:1 in the manuals, and 3.9:1 in the autos. All skyline diff are 28 spline 4 pinion centered.

If you want something with an LSD, see if you can find a diff from a R31 silhouette (most of these were factory LSD). They seem to be fine behind moderate power levels, but not huge power levels.

lsd's are a piece of piss to get for R31's. they are only borg warner diffs like under falcons commodores valiants etc etc. so LSD's from the above would work. you can get spools, lock right lockers, air lockers, just about anything for them.

thing is to the best of my knoledge the stocky LSD's are cone type, and wear out quicker than a 90yo hooker with arthritus if you plan on having any fun what so ever. so the lock right locker might be the go if you dont mind clunks

edit: R31's have the handbrake in the caliper itself, not internal drums. so maybe a diff outta an EF on wagon and get a centre out of an R31 pintara might be the go (then you get leaf mounts and sway bar mounts.. but then have to change stud pattern)

Another option for brakes to get rid of the crap calipers with the hand intergrated, would be to use the disc brakes off the back of a VN commodore or something similar. This stuff will bolt straight to the housing, and will only require the discs to be redrilled to 4 stud.

    R31 or Hilux.

Ideally you don't want an Altezza LSD - it will be a Torsen - there were a few of these with some pretty pics of them all exploded (except G series and behind 1JZs).

My brother has a commodore diff with 4.11 gears and mini spool, locker which was shortened and it cost me 1250 fat craft diffs and then i just had to buy u bolts (25 DOLLARS) to bolt it straight up on the standard leafs, still no dramas. And thats with a sr20 in his corolla

i would go the r31, both me and my bro are goin to go down that path, and alot of peps do and you can run ford, skyline and commo gears in them and all can be in 28 or 31 spline axles

mate the toyota crown ms112 (1981ish) had a f series rear end with disc brakes - and then just bolt a ma61 lsd into it!

or...you could always buy my hiace diff and there is a bracket kit available to put the 291x18mm vented ma70 discs and callipers onto it also.

well my main problem is that i want it closest to stock width as possible. As i have rims i need to fit without flaring, rolling guards. I should just go to a diff shop give him a r31 diff and say make it strong and makes these fit.
