    Without sounding like too much of a pessimist - could the change have occurred because corrosion (rust) caused by using plain water has effected the heat transfer properties of the block? rust is a poor conductor of heat.

    We had one like that, Brother Bill.
    Had some classic quotes, when asking 'larger' Year 7 student what career he wanted to persue, the student replied "an F1 driver sir". Said Brother's reply "You wouldn't fit in the cockpit!"

    Sorry, no more thread hijack

    well I've managed to borrow the infrared thermometer from work, and well see where the hot spots are. And also compare the water temp to the sensor (although for both sensors to be dodgy, surely that can't be the case?)

    Just an idea, but how long was the block dry when you had the radiator out getting it cleaned?

    Is it possiable that you cleaned the radiator only to fill it with scale (that had dried in the block ) and was flushed out when the rad was reinstalled?

    Just an idea..!

    Cheers

    well before the turbo was installed, and the following radiator, i had the old radiator and block professionally cleaned by a radiator shop. (basically flush system, and use high pressure water/air hose to flush out the crap.

    Using the infrared heat gun you should be able to see if the fan and radiater are doing their job by comparing inlet and outlet temperatures on radiater.
    If fan can pull temp down at a stationery idle it should be OK at cruise.
    Driving at moderate load on a dyno and checking temp with heat gun would also be an option.
    Does changing fan cut out and in points do anything to temperature.
    Also is the fan cutting at cruise. If you can't tell maybe you could rig up a temporary light in the cab that comes on with the fan so you can see what it is doing.

    I just got home and will be using the heat gun to find out what the story is.

    The fan can pull the temps down fine at idle.
    Dyno time is expensive, not really an option.

    Fan cut out in and out shouldn't apply. I have the microtech switch the fan on at 99 degrees, and it switches itself off automatically at 92degrees. And microtech you can use to see if the output is active or not.

    rightio, i spent a fair bit of time outside taking averages of temperatures.

    This is Microtech reading VS Thermostat Housing||Rear of Head (beside water temp sensor)
    92degrees - 85degrees||83degrees
    99degrees - 96degrees||93degrees

    So it appears the water temp sensor is taking the piss and giving me wrong values.

    That's funny you know, I was just about to mention that possibility, as I remember we had mentioned it once when talking about the Wolf 3D's, when I first put my one in and questioned the temp reading!

    it seems the case for me. Ill shoot the question across to the microtech forums and see what they have to say about it. Might have to swap to a more generic sensor to give me accurate water temps.

    ill keep you all posted, given rep to everyone i can.

    where were you taking the temperature reading from?

    the thermostat housing might be the best

    i did write thermostat housing, and back of head beside water temp sensor.
