A Solex/Weber FAQ would be good - it has my vote.
I used to get backfires through the carbs, but yeah i fixed them through timing, but i still get popping out the zorst on compression braking.
this thread been a good readOriginally Posted by sillycar chick

I just had a thought slightly OT, would it be possible for admin to move all the threads
about solex into a solex dedicated thread or solex/weber thread? lots of questions and
answers that could be put into one thread? any thoughts ...
cheers.

Yes please I agree, Mods can we dedicate a Solex/Weber/Dellorto thread?
Sillycar Chick the poping on engine brake or throttle off, is over-run fuel igniting in the exhaust. The flame you see out the side of competition cars is the same thing except they run less restricted exhaust systems and a variety of other things which increases it.
My EFI Camry with a better flowing exhaust does it. Nothing to worry about and it sounds nice. It's what most of us want-a-be racers want to happen.
Joey, in that case it may be ignition slightly too advanced up high or a bit of timing float caused by the distributor. The distributor is not precise enough at high revs simply due to design.

Rodger

Hi,
Good idea about a dedicated carby thread, as there's bits of carby info all over the place.
I'll check into it. In the interim if you can post links to other good carby info you find in these threads, it would help me get them all together.

I suppose I'd better find out what model carbs I have and order some kits![]()

The whole IG timing ect is definentaly a possibility. Some times when i go to start the car it just acts like its dead (not cranking or any sounds at all) so i have to baby it and turn the key very slowly, often cranks after about 3 tries, but yeah will try and check into that.
Cheers, Joey

Hmmmm suprise suprise my carbs have decided to die again....
I started the car and was backing out of driveway and it started to idle real low so i thought it just might need a bit of warming up so i took it down the street, felt a bit funny, and when i stopped and it was idling it was slowly just idling lower and lower and cut out within a couple of seconds. Went to start the car again, fired up ok but within 3 seconds and pumping the throttle it just died out again. Now when i try to start it it cranks but it won't fire up(put foot to the floor just incase its flooded for some reason but still wont fire).
I had a little muck around with the fuel mixtures (did the turn to the end and then wind back 6 times) and still nothing. Checked the dizzy cap, when i took the leads out of each of their caps there seemed to be a fair bit black carbon deposit stuff which i blew out of each but still nothing, so i swapped the leads with another set and still nothing!
Also found this, air filter is only about 2/3 months old:

Booked her in to get towed tomorrow to the carby place ive gone to the last 4 times and spent close to $1,000 trying to get them running right. This time i will refuse to pay anything and i'll make sure theyre running good, if he won't do it then i'll ask for a refund for some of the money (which he probably just laught at me) and if still nothing i'll cut my losses and head out to a place in bayswater which i've been told they know what they are doing and are cheap (well cheap compared to the guy i've been going too: $300 rebuild kit for both solexs at bayswater compared to the $700 i paid
).
I love carby's dont get me wrong but it makes me wish of having efi![]()

Hi,
Why bother going to the same place again? It's obvious they don't know what they're doing and have done a poor job the other times, so why give them another chance?
Find someone who knows what they're doing, regarding these old carbs.
Failing that, buy the carby kits yourself and send a PM to Rodger, who knows these old carbs. I'm sure he can talk you through anything that confuses you. Also, if you search the threads you'll find a thread I put up that shows how to tune your 18R-G/2T-G carbs.
The biggest problem with these old carbs is they are a bit finnicky to get set-up properly, but once done you'll love them.
Of course, if it's all too much you can do what many others in these forums, who have found the technical challenge of carbs to be beyond them... is to whack on an EFI system and then tell everyone how much better EFI is over (worn and badly tuned) carbs!

PS: Here's the link to the tuning Solex thread (maybe you should print it out and give this to the people who are doing your carbs!)... http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...ighlight=solex

That is what i was thinking this morning river, so i rang up a place that i got reccomended to and has worked with solexs, but yet when i told him about them he doesn't want to have a thing to do with them and won't agree to working with themWhy bother going to the same place again? It's obvious they don't know what they're doing and have done a poor job the other times, so why give them another chance?Ended up ringing my local mechanic for advice and he has a connection to a guy who works at Melbourne Performance Centre in bayswater who is willing to have a go with em, so fingers crossed.

I did a seach and whilst there is a lot on solex stuff (thanks to river's scannings) there is nothing on the webers for those poor unfortunates that have webers

Joey, have you checked the carbies are getting fuel? What your describing sounds alot like when i forget to turn my fuel pump on. Are you running and electronic or a mechanical pump?
The carbies are definentaly getting fuel, can here the fuel being squirted when accelerator pressed down. Ahh not sure of the type of pump i have tho (dont hurt me im still a noob)

Have you checked the spark plugs as well as the leads? And have you checked that there is a spark coming through the leads?Originally Posted by joey
Got new spark plugs put in when the pilots were replaced (around 2 weeks ago). I changed the leads yesterday to the original ones i had on there and still nothing. Don't think i have the neccesary tools to check if there's a spark but last time RACV dude came around i asked him if he could quickly check the timing but he wouldn't, instead he put some clip jobbie over the leads and it was showing pulses and he said everything was normal so i assume that is what he was doing.
He also reccomended i get some performace plugs such as platinum plugs as he reckons the increase in fuel load from the carbies affect the spark plug some how, but i have other things on my mind before i do that (carbies fixed, bonnet painted, extractor ect.)
