    Default Later model Corolla keys

Some people I know have a fairly recent Corolla (ZZE121?) and have managed to lose the remote for it. Both Toyota and the local locksmith quote some unthinkable fortune to do something about it, are there any other options that people have come across?

If you have lost both your master keys you're screwed (basically).
If you still have a master key, buy an additional key (at maybe $300), and get it coded to your car (either toyota or locksmith or insist on copies of the relevant pages of the manual coz they just screwed you over for it).

The key controls both the door locks and the engine immobiliser.

Toyota's (and Lexus') position on lost keys is that you need to buy a new computer (circa $2200) and new keys (~$300 each). There are third party people who will reprogram your computer to allow it to accept new keys - cheapest was $440, up to $1200.

In my not so humble opinion this is an absolutely ludicrous position and if anyone who works for toyota reads this I would encourage you to provide a sensible and reasonable argument to support this lunacy, considering the US market has access to virtually free ($50) recoding services. If my understanding is not correct, please provide contact details for relevant toyota personnel who provide an acceptable solution.

In addition, some insurance policies will provide key recoding for lost or stolen keys, due to the extravagant cost.

You after just the remote? I thought they were relatively ok priced because you can reprogram the remotes to a car making them non-specific??

I get all my keys cut at a place called J-Lock Mobile Locksmiths in Blacktown. Quoted $86 for a VW Golf immobiliser key to be replicated. Give them a try: (02) 9621 4318

Doesn't sound altogether lovely so far, does it!

I'll find out what they've actually lost and see what can be done about it.
