    Ewww
the JZA80 cost $370... but that doesn't include the compulsary 3rd party personal (which I think qld does), that adds $380, for a total of $750

bloody melbournites have it easy - rego includes 3PP and is CHEAP

In Vic you pay compulsory 3rd party (personal, not property) with insurance.

it's the same in all states, 3rd party property is an individual choice.

    Fascinating, but not 6-speed related.

Norbie - I thought we weren't to use Dexron iii although that is what the Castrol Transmax Z is - a cross between ii and iii. I'm just sick of the hard shifting. I'll try anything except Redline - that one is a big DO NOT USE in the 233 model Getrags.

Rz from Performance Forums has been using Dexron III in his V160 for a few years now. It has eleventy billion hp and sees frequent abuse on the street and the track, original gearbox is still going strong - that's evidence enough for me.

I hope to have time on Sunday to change the oil. Then I'll know if the Royal Purple really does make a difference.

Finally there is light at the end of the tunnel! Last night I took some detailed measurements for the tailshaft, and this morning I dropped into Driveline Services in Archerfield to discuss my options. And it turns out all of my options are pretty damn expensive.

The tailshaft needs to be 1.3m long and has to cope with 8000rpm and 600hp, so when I asked about a single-piece shaft they said it would have to use minimum 4" tube to cope with those speeds. Anyone who has seen underneath an MA61 will tell you there's no chance of that happening, so a 2-piece it has to be.

The spec I settled on was a 2-piece with 3" mild steel tube, big solid uni's (V8 Supercar spec), and some kind of monster centre bearing - they're still searching for a suitable one but I may have to fandangle a custom mounting arrangement because all the Toyota ones seem to be too small.

Anyway, the initial quote for the above was $1200-1300. OUCH! Things get a bit pricey when you start playing with a decent chunk of power. Oh well, I don't have much of a choice so I placed an order and it should be ready for me next week. That means I'll be a poor bastard but I'll still have a grin on my face because I'll (hopefully) be driving my 6-speed Supra very soon!

So, now I have a near-bulletproof transmission and tailshaft, so what's the next weak point? I hope it's not the diff, that won't be a cheap thing to upgrade.

I vote the diff axles. The ones that pop into the diff

    Norbie,
Sounds a bit over the top to me mate? Want me to measure mine up? From memory i have 75mm seamless tube, 3mm wall thickness. Rear splines have let go 1st so i'd say it's up top the task. Can't recall the exact price but well under half of what you have been quoted..and that was with a new output spline off the Tremec.

Did they say whether it was revs or torque that's gonna cause you grief. Mine has seen 7000rpm but that's the max and aiming to keep it down to 6500rpm as the lower the revs the longer your engine will live. I hazzard to guess though that i have more torque than you'll ever need?

I think this is the part that makes mine expensive, ie no output spline on the V160 which means I need this big slip-joint thing in the middle of the tailshaft. They also have to fabricate a flange for the diff side because I have this weird custom arrangement so no doubt that adds to the price.

It was a combination of revs and tailshaft length, both of which are apparently the biggest limiting factors. I'm guessing your tailshaft is a fair bit shorter than mine? As for revs, I've just bought a set of 272 degree cams so I'll need to bump the rev limiter up to 8000 to take advantage of them. When you factor in overdrive the tailshaft could see some pretty serious speeds.

The overdrive will help by reducing driveline revs required per kph? same as taller diff ratio?

The car however will no doubt see some pretty serious speeds
