Ouch, that looks nasty. If something like that happens I'll probably look into a JZA80 diff swap, they're much stronger and I can easily get one with a 3.2:1 ratio which better matches the V160. Of course that will require custom driveshafts which from my understanding means $$$.

Modifications to my tailshaft cost $445 from Truckline in Toowoomba. They are pretty beefy to stand up to the Cruisers but may not suit the revs you are chasing. Still worth looking at.

you'd also need a runway that used to have american bombers visit or big old Lancasters bounce/land with no brakes. Your average Oz airstrip simply isn't long enough - and the ones that used to see heavy birds visits are either still in use (amberly) or in out-of-the-way places (NT?).

OK finally, I have a tailshaft! I'm also $1265 poorer, but if you wanna play you gotta pay.

I tried to do a test-fit but I must have measured the studs in the gearbox flange incorrectly, because the 10mm holes in the flange are a little too small. Not a big deal though, I'll buy an 11mm drill bit on the weekend and hopefully all will be good. Watch this space!

Looks like the sliding joint is at the diff end . should be at the G/B end as to stop flexing the center bearing if it slides in or out .
Is it a cruiser sliding joint or another type .

The gb has no sliding joint on the ouput shaft aka R154. It just has a flange so you have to put one somewhere.

Norbie - looks just like mine so it will work for sure. Front pipe looks about the same size as the back pipe.

Yes we all know we need to use a sliding joint but all my question is that it looks like the sliding joint is at the diff end of the tailshaft and it should be at the gearbox end . It may just be the picture tho .
You dont want to have a sliding joint behind the center bearing as when the engine moves it flexes the centre bearing each time ,

i think as far as movement goes, the major in/out movement would be from the diff end wouldn't it ? i would've thought the diff side of the centre bearing would be the go for the slip joint.

For a solid axle car, yes.
For those of us with IRS, the diff doesn't move.

The slide needs to be between the centre bearing and the gbox.

Actually both the gearbox and the diff will move a small amount, so obviously the centre bearing is able to cope with these small movements since the original tailshaft only had a slide on one end.

i had a look at the car by which all other cars should be measured, ( V6 VX Commodore ) which has irs. it has a centre bearing and 2 rubber couplings. i didn't think the engine would move that much.

The engine and box move more than the diff cradel , I have seen cars that have the slide on the diff end and do move on the centre bearing rubber but the centre bearing doesnt last as long . when i got my shaft made for 2J in mx 83 i put the slide up the G/box end .
I am curious as to why they put it at the diff end on others .
Your tailshaft looks the goods norbie, they probaaly used a new slip joint as all the second hand ones are a bit worn now .

Yes everything is new in that tailshaft, it would want to be for the money I paid!

Anyway I installed the tailshaft today, I had to slightly elongate the holes in the front flange but apart from that everything fits nicely. Unfortunately no driving yet as I'm missing the nuts for the V160 flange, and being an obscure 11mm thread I can't pick up new ones just anywhere, they'll probably have to be ordered from Toyota. Anyway I'll take care of that during the week, and in the meantime I'll make sure everything else is ready for the first drive of a MA61 with 2JZ and 6-speed!

60 or 80 series cruiser norbs rear shaft flange nuts are the same . if ordering them order for rear tailshaft flange on the back of the transfer for a 94 model fzj80 . order the flat washers as well .
