Default Hiace/Hilux differentials and tailshafts HELP

okay, I did a search and found that apparently what I have is a G series toyota differential.

It came out of a diesel Hiace Van apparently and had a 4.375 centre. I bought the Differential already cut down with matching axles and drums and found a tailshaft (flange? bit that bolts to the differential flange?) thingy to suit with the universal joint as well.

Now, the pinion bearing in the 4.375 centre was noisy as hell, so I had that pulled out and replaced with a 4.5 centre. Only problem is, the pinion bearing on this one is also noisy AND the flange bit on the centre has a different bolt pattern to the 4.375 centre, so my tailshaft no longer bolts up.

where an earth did the 4.5 centre come from then? as the axles fit, I cant find the matching bit that bolts to the diff centre.
Is it out of a Hilux or something else?

I tried swapping the part that the tail shaft bolts to on the diff centre (whatever its called), between the 4.375 and the 4.5 centres and they weren't compatable. bum.

I no longer have the 4.375 centre either, so I think my options are to track down another one and get that rebuilt with a Lokka diff centre, or find the bit for the tailshaft and get the tailshaft remade?

The 4.5 is most likely from a hilux , When you say the bolt pattern is different do you meen the hole sizes are different or the holes don't line up at all , If the holes are a different size you can drill them out and use 10mm bolts but if the hole pattern is out just turn the flange 45 degree and redrill the holes in the pinion flange .
I;v done this many times .

I have also found differences between early and late Hilux diffs. E.g. the casting of the diff centre housing limiting the size of the pinion gear when changing ratios, course spline (early) and fine spline (late) front flanges.

You will need to ensure that the person who installs the diff centre knows how to properly set the pre-load on the carrier and the pinion. If this is not properly done it will also cause the diff to be noisy!

For the cost of the pinion and carrier bearings it is worth having them replaced. I got the part numbers off the old bearings and went into a bearing place to get them. I didnt compare their prices to Toyota but I would expect that they were cheaper.

Personally I would hunt down another centre.

guys, thanks. given me some brain food.

Trevor, from what I've looked at under the car and in pisspoor garage light, the holes on the 4.5 diff front flange are too small.

we drilled them out a bit larger, but Im a bit <pulls face> about this.

early, yes, I think I will be hunting down a new centre. and yep, the front flanges were different. Im not sure which one had the fine spline and which one had the coarse spline.
