Geez so long ago I cant remember all this haha
I think it was 30mm less than the AE86/KE70 rack.
MWP would be best to talk to about that as he compared the 2 and went with the AE82 in his RA28.
But by how much?Originally Posted by TurboRA28

No worries, thanks anyway.
This may be helpful , recalling a conversation years ago here re a early 323 R + P setup being converted into a ta/ra celica - I cant recall if it was ra23 or ta22 though - but it might be another option to suss out..
Sorry i cant give more details - was one of the QLD celica club cars

Just roughly measured an AE82 rack, dodging around engine cradle and other bits. Rack ball end centre to ball end centre approximately 550mm, as against KE70 @590mm.
Word is that Jamie from Yakandanda (Twin turbo 3.4litr V8) "has used an AE82 rack, and would not recommend it"
OK I now have the TA22 X member, draglink, and the KE70 rack sitting on the ground.
So here are the current measurements:
KE70 LCA Xmember bolt hole to bolt hole, (centre) 620mm
KE70 rack ball centre to rack ball centre, 590mm.
TA22 LCA Xmember bolt hole to bolt hole, (centre) 540mm
TA22 draglink centre of hole to centre of hole 460mm (steering rod connection point)
AE82 rack ball centre to rack ball centre, 550mm.
cheers Chuck.

Hm, i wonder why Jamie wouldnt reccomend it. Seems to be pretty much spot on for the length.

Remeasured KP rack since I had a bit more time. Approximate rack ball end centre to ball end centre is 565mm so wider than the AE82. Since the AE82 is more available is probably a better option, if anyone seriously wants a KP one I can probably put you onto someone who might be interested in freighting to Oz.

Was the AE82 power steer?
They did have a power steering option from memory.

Ok.
I just rang a wrecker and asked for the rack and he asked if I want the lines![]()
I'll have to find one with out.![]()
(subcribed) How will the geometry change if you were to use XT130 struts, shortened or otherwise?
The one thing that will not change, is the Ackerman angle, as when you install the XT130 struts, you still retain the lower control arm, ball joint, and steering arm.
What we are playing with here in installing the rack and pinion, will bring about the same changes, regardless of which strut you use.
cheers Chuck.

Thats right.. Steering knuckle length is the only part that could change ackerman it you swapped to another one of a different length.
Other than that ackerman is changed by the forward/backward position of rack.
Also if you switched to the XT130 LCAs and then switched to the appropriate length tierods it wouldnt have any signficant effect, apart from amplifying what bumpsteer you have built into the system.

wont some RCAs help eliminate bumpsteer?
