sorry should have specified. It's for a coilover type strut. Camber adjustable style top hat. I have the koni upper hat but haven't decided on camber top as unsure about clearance issue.

ur the only reason im attempting this, if u didnt explain it in such black and white terms i would have never thought of it. ive disassembled the strut except for the spring cos i cant find my compressors, get my chassis stands from a mates place, get his welder and go nuts ill try and remember to get pics
Skiddz - PLEASE get LOTS of pics!!

Thanks to takai and this brilliant thread, Im going to attempt this coil over strut setup on my second '22 when i get around to doing it up, and photos would be a lot of help. I always wanted coilovers, but didnt know how to go about it, or if it would work.

Hey Takai, do you plan on using any of your coilovers in a street registered car? I mean legally? Just curious as to how easily this could pass an engineer.... tho I dont see why it wouldnt, it seems pretty safe... I was thinking of just adding an extra collar at the bottom of the threaded part where it meets up to the strut as an extra safety measure to stop the threaded alloy part ever sliding down the strut after years of being thrashed the crap out of!

My AE86 is street registered, it passed with the coilovers fine. The big issue that they had with it was the lack of static travel with the 450lbs springs.
Its a bit hard to see, but on my struts i have a 10mm tall locating ring welded on to ensure that they cant move down at all.

angle is exacly the same well not exactly somthing of the order of 0.23degrees, im putting that down to my measurements but i think that amount of variation is neglegable (sp?)

bit of delay with the springs n stuff, gotta work all this weekend and next week is swotvac so, maybe after the 14th i should start to see a little progress i may do a little tinkering but nothing substantial, unless i skip the last day of uni on friday

also pug disks are RDA 272 and i had no trouble getting them, went into beenleigh bearings at 10 their delivery awas at 12 got the disks on the delivery and picked em up at 12 also got new bearings and seals for the hubs, $32 a side

Not quite, the holes need to be 1.2mm inboard. Ive only ever drilled them 2mm OD out and filed slightly or just filed. These new ones will be simply filed, cbfed drilling.
If you have drilled 4mm oversize then something is up. However, if its 2mm oversize then dont stress, remember thats only a 1mm radius increase.

yo... dunno if its been touched on yet but my power steering arms dont clear the calliper when all bolted up... so i hear you can jus swap the struts side for side so the calliper is at the front... havent tryed this yet but cant see why it wont work fine...

Uh, the caliper shoudl ALWAYS be at the front. None of the brakes will clear with the caliper at the back.

Yep yep, Mine are at the front too, other wise it would hit the steering arm.

    Takai,
Good work on the write up, i still havnt got mine together
reason is im still trying to work out all the free heights and shock possition to work out the best combo of spacing and cutting
ATM it looks like a very small spacer (just to lift the shock off the bottom of the tube) then cut out the rest,
does anyone how much travel the shock should have in both directions from sitting on the ground stationary, ATM im looking at 1/3 down or should i be going for a 50/50

You have a very strange car. Ive tried multiple combinations to get the rear clearance and nothing has worked.
The only way i can see it is if you have RCAs of some sort to space the steering arms down.
Either way, the caliper should still be at the front because thats how the bleed system was designed.
