    Good thinking there Tiff

I hope all goes well with the engine, it'll be good to have another 18R-G running around again.

Tim, do you not know how many 18R-Gs I currently own/posses.... I have 5 of my own, plus one of Norbie's. I dont think i need anymore spares

I am, however, more interested in getting another 18R-G on the road, because there just isnt enough anymore!

Oh yeah!... i know you're 18RG history There was a hint of sacrasm in the comment

That reminds me, I haven't kept up with how your 18RGT build is going, but keen to hear the progress!! Might have to do a bit of a search tonight.

Also keen to see Tiff's '28 up and running with the RG, but trips to NSW toymods meets will be few and far between these days

Well I've owned one the longest since 11/1976 and have been happily running the same pair of Solex for 30 years with ONE rebuild in 1995 at 200,000 km total cost $450 in 30 years.
I paid particular attention to the correct jetting (135/700 econ or 145/750 power) and the engine was flexible and strong up to 6500-7000 rpm.
Toyota got it right in their design as illustrated by the take up of over 10,000 18RG's from cut up JDM;s imported into Australia from 1980 onwards by API, EKW and sundry.

At any one time on ebay there are several 18RG's for sale.

They are however getting very old and long in the tooth and like big A's everyone has one.

    Tiff,

If it was me, I'd persist with the Solexes (mind you I am kind of hooked on them). In the long run it works out cheaper to rebuild a set than it is to buy other brands. The Solexes are usually jetted correctly anyway and have the linkages for the throttle in place.

Any new or used Weber or Delorto may well need to have linkages and jetting sorted which adds cost.

Check Damo82's dyno sheet of his recently built 18R-G. Runs 40mm Solexes and is what to aim for regarding power.

    Regards

    Rodger

mm the thing is, I've already spent about a grand on the solexs, only ever had them running sweet for one week after a 600$ dyno tune. They've been rebuilt more than three times and taken up countless hours of my dads time (which can never be repaid in his opinion), I gave up on the Solexs mainly due to the fact that THEY HATE ME!

Spent 300 on the delortos which had just been rebuilt, then me and dad rebuilt them again, made up linkages (fun fun!), took the car to a dyno guy, who after five weeks decides there's nothing he can do!! So I've formed a grudge against the delortos too. Dad wants to work on them some more but to be honest, I'm sick of being reminded how lucky I am that he's managed to fit my carbys into his massive weekend agendas!

Pretty childish reasons to move onto webers, but hey, I'm young, stoopid and have a good credit rating =P

    Hi,

I might be pig-headed, but I can't see your problems being all attributable to the carbies.

If Kleinig rebuilt them then you can bet they were done properly. He's the Solex guru and everyone I've spoken to swear by his workmanship - I know I do 'cos my car felt like it had a new engine after he worked on them and the engine still runs like a new one. Furthermore, you've gone through a set of Delortos.... and now you're going to try Webbers.

I just feel there is something else... maybe the timing is wrong... the cams are out of position slightly... something maybe not put back in correctly after you rebuilt the engine.

    Could be electrical....

Can you describe exactly what the engine does? What it's issues are?

    You are pig-headed

From memory, after the cranky frank rebuild one of the venturis decided to explode the carby and subsequently wanged them into never being the same again.

Dellortos are a fickle machine if ever i've seen one! Unless done properly they are a PITA to run reliably. If i were in Tiff's shoes i'd cut the losses on them and sell 'em to replace with an EFI setup....
.... if you *really* want the gurgling sound of twin sidedraught carbies, then a pair of injection perfection style DCOE throttles will solve the aural problem, whilst maintaining enduring reliability and economy

Saving the full EFI setup - i'd be moving to webers, they worked well for me in the past and i was quite happy with them.

    Tif,

Send the Solexes down to me. I'll look at them and if you dont want them back I'll pay what they are worth for them.

I can then also let you know what condition they are now in and if it is worth you having them back.

I am here to help, not make much money.

    Regards

    Rodger
