maybe you need a electric pump added, thats what im going o have to do when i put my 18rg in my hilux cause even my 18rc isnt getting enough fuel haha. i think my mech pump is shot.Originally Posted by picko87
Looking for some advice/help with tuning my 18rg TA22 conversion. The solex's just dont seem to be doing the job, misses heaps under acceleration and just doesn't seam to be getting enough fuel through...give it some choke and this helps but just runs like a piece of shit.
Have had it recently at ultratune but the best he could do was in his words "get it to 90%' and said I need more money spent on carbies to get it right. As the carbies are standard cant understand why it runs so poorly.
Any suggestions? would appreciate some advice.
Cheers.

Did ultratune actualy tell you what you needed to spend money on, other than thottle shaft they dont realy wear out.
A pull apart, clean kit and set float levels would probably be a good start.

Just a couple of thoughts I have gathered from my experience with my 2/3TG hybrid running twin solexs.....
1. What compression ratio is your engine running? (if you know), unless your engine is stock standard, then you probably wont need to think about this one. I found running a higher compression ratio can mean your jetting may need to be changed.
2. What fuel are you running? These old engines were built in the era of leaded fuel. Regular unleaded has a lower octane than leaded, hence why you really need to run premium (98 octane or higher I have found runs better) - unless of course you are already running higher octane fuel![]()
I am not all that experienced yet with jetting on these yet, still have my L plates onso unfortunately cannot offer a great deal of technical knowledge, but if jetting is your concern, I suggest you have a chat with "Rodger". Well, actually he will probably be able to help you anyway, he is the Toymods guru when it comes to Solexs. Good luck!

Hi,
If the Webbers were so much more awesome then the Solex then Toyota would of used them on their racing engines back in the early-mid 70s. They ran Solex carbs back then.Originally Posted by picko87
They're finicky but once tuned they are the ducks nuts. You need to remember these carbs are getting old and the gaskets would be hard and need replacing, things need to be adjusted etc. You may need to pull them apart, get a Solex carby kit, and get them rebuilt back to specs and then tuned by someone who knows how to tune these carbs.
Ballpark for a full rebuild and retune is circa $700-$800 for your carbs, plugs, timing and dyno run to check it all - by someone who knows their stuff. Not cheap, but when it's been done properly you'll think you've got a new engine under the bonnet.
Oh yeah, as mentioned, run 98 petrol in it.

As river said, they can be the ducks nuts.
The guys at ultratune have reacted as expected. They have easier access to all the Weber bits.
What condition are the Solexes in?
Only thing I can add is: Make sure that the inner venturies are in place and tight. Make sure the jet blocks are screwed down. Make sure the fuel pump jet mechanisms underneath are not leaking. Then think about pulling them apart.
If Ultatune did not even touch the Solexes and only run it on the dyno and set idle speed, balance and mixture then enough said about them.
I admit when Solexes are well and truly used they are shit, but to be fair you can also get shit Webers and Dellortos.
For your state of engine tune, the jetting will only be out a couple of sizes.
Probably need a bigger main air and main jet. #160 and #145
Pilot jet may need to be increased in size. If a #63.2 then it would be ok.

Rodger
One thing that really helped on my 2TG, rather than rebuilding, we pulled the top off the carbs, pulled every jet visible out and dissassembled them, blew them out and re assembled.
If your carefull you wont need to replace any of the gaskets.
A rebuild will have the same effect, but my 2TG seems to be needing the jets blown out every few months as it spends most of its time on dirt

get the carbs rebuilt and someone who knows what they are doing to tune them properly you will notice the huge difference when tuned .i did this when i did my conversion but i have 40mm webers. dont go to ultra tune again i also replaced mechanical fuel pump with electric pump Steve
Hey mate what did you mod to install the 18rg in your ta22
